1984 Overlander

Looks pretty good

Just pop rivet in some sheet metal floor boards and follow me to Moab:thumbsup:

Not much of an update but I finally finished up a small rear barn door project of a little paint work and repair.

Rear barn door open.

I also polished the barn door while tire carrier was off. Paint came out nice.

We did a quick "tune-up" on the Overlander, and now it can power brake:thumbsup:

Quick question - This is a 1984 Jeep, but it does not have the late 1983 and later computer controlled carb, pulse air system, etc. This jeep is set up like an 1982 model, regarding emissions and carb. Did any of the Overlanders come with the later year emissions stuff? I can tell this one left the factory with its current set up, just wondering if all export Overlanders are like this:shrug: It does make them easier to diagnose problems/work on:thumbsup:

Yes as far as i know that is the set up we had over here.Jeep Aus.folded in 86.that set up with all the emissions crap is bad enough.

Mine came with a holley carb bolted to the 6 cylinder so I dont know for sure, but I also dont see the typical ECU connector and other evidence of a computer controlled carb on it....so looks to be another example of one.

I know that all of these are titled/have the VIN's of 1984 models, but they all seem to have the power trains of pre 1983 models. I wonder if these were built in 1982, and then with shipping/overseas inspections etc, they were not sold until mid '83 as 1984 models:shrug:

I just find it "funny" that AMC would have ran a "custom" batch of 1984 model jeeps with pre '83 emissions:shrug:

The VINs fall right in line with the 84 Scramblers. I'm no longer surprised by anything that AMC did. Here though, I would bet this is a case where the spec for bidding was written in 82 to specifically fit the Scrambler and basically make it impossible for anyone else to win the contract. Thereby insuring that AMC won but only after the typical bid period. That meant that by the time it was awarded the equipment had changed but the nature of the govt contract meant they had to match the now dated spec. Working for the Navy opened my eyes to a LOT of stuff like this.

Cleaned the OEM carpet today. It came out really nice. It's still wet in the photo. I reversed the front mat to show what a full set of LHD OEM carpet would have looked close to.

That makes a bunch of sense for the "Postals", since they were built/made to order for the quasi governmental USPS, but the Overlander's were not built for a government contract, were they:shrug:

There are too many difference between the Overlanders and the Postals to lead me to believe that the Overlanders are just modified Postals:shrug:

I just thought it was interesting, please continue to comment/speculate:thumbsup:

I was only talking about the Postals when I said they fell in the middle of the VIN run in 84. I don't know about the Overlanders.

I am assuming that the Postals all came with the "83 and up" emissions package (computer controlled carb, pulse air, etc). I forgot to look at jeepaddicts when I was over there:shrug:

I'll have to get jeepaddict's Overlander's VIN# and see if it is also a regular '84 VIN, but I some how doubt that:shrug:
His VIN does say it was built in Toledo, I just find it odd that AMC would have been able to build an '84 model vehicle that had 2 year prior emissions equipment on it:shrug:

Our postal has a sept 1983 build sticker below the drivers door on the inside of the tub.

Nothing Major just some fun facts. Feel free to chime in with your postal or Overlander info as well
I did a little digging around and found the following:

The postal's safety certification label on the inner pass side, our driver's is stamped "SEP 1983". as month and year of manufacture
photo12-1.jpg

The CATALYST decal on the postal reads "applicable to 1984 model year"
photo13-1.jpg

The under hood decal, on postal, on top the grill also reads "applicable to 1984 model year"
photo18-1.jpg

The motor is dated May 21, 1981. I assume not original
photo17-1.jpg

postal VIN ending in 019642 is titled as a 84 model.

Overlander safety certification label/catalyst was barely there so I couldn't make out the date on them.

The under hood decal, on Ov, on top the grill reads "applicable to 1983 model year"
photo16-1.jpg

Motor is dated June 7, 1983 and also stamped with "C8871123"
C88 I assume is 4.2 L, Scrambler and the 71123 is matching sequential number from vin
photo15-1.jpg

Export tag reads 1/84
photo14-1.jpg

Ov is decoded and titled as an 83 model.

What does all of this mean? I have no clue. I always assumed the postal was an 84 and the Ov was an 83. I believe the Ov is the first one built and probably the most valuable Ov out there.:rotfl: Like the first Rolls Royce Silver Ghost that is currently insured for 57 mil. bucks.

My overlander is a 84 sold 85 it is the same as yours. when i first got mine back in 93 i took all that crap off and put headers on it.Our emissions laws were not as bad as yours we were still using leaded fuel or super here untill 86 all new cars had to run on unleaded after that. That is proberly why jeep AUS. stuck with the simple 82 setup

By the way are you keeping the front idicators on the fenders? A bloke on ebay aus is selling genuine items (Hella) got some myself

I do plan on keeping the front indicators. I picked up a few Hella lenses for them. The lenses on currently are NOS. Did you buy new bases also or just the lenses?

I started to put everything I took out back in. Trying to make space/not lose or mix up parts. In the process I added more slate blue including limited slate steering wheel, limited grab bar, limited roll bar pad, and slate blue wheel house pads.
