Revised my early post regarding 21 Road & Billings Canyon trails. My days were wrong, I was looking at June. Doh!

On another note, our rental house in Silverton is for the nights of Sunday July 21 thru Friday July 26.
We will be hitting some trails in Silverton area on the 22nd & 23rd as well if anyone want to join us.

My son and I will be riding motorcycles up there that weekend and staying at the RV park in Silverton. We will try to find you all and check in while we are there.

Any interest from anyone? maybe hitting 21 Road and Billings Canyon trails?

Thinking July 19, 20 or 21 ?

Just kicking around some ideas.

I hear Hwy 50 is closed from Gunnison to Montrose so we will either have to come to Silverton from the south or north.

I'll be in transit from CA.

Do we have a rough idea on how many might come? Seems like only a handful or less so far in this thread.

We're in for sure. On the way home we will be going to Sun Valley, Idaho. My wife is a major mountain biker. She may ride a few trails in the Silverton area while we are there. Her regular Saturday ride group planned the Sun Valley trip. I will hit some area trails while there too. Never wheeled in Idaho.

If travel goes as planned, Clif Adams and I are thinking about hitting Spring Creek and Saxon mtn trails early Friday morning July 19th. Hit us up if interested.

From there, off to Grand Junction. We have a cabin rented for 2 nights. Plan to run 21 road Saturday July 20 and Billings Canyon Sunday July 21.

Then over to Silverton Sunday afternoon/early evening.

Near Spring Creek trailhead for the night.
Hitting it early in the morning, have a couple other Scramblers that may join us.

We loaded up the Scrambler on the trailer and set out for the 1,200 mile drive this morning. It was 110 degrees in Redding but we were good in the 1999 F350 PowerStroke I’ve had since it was new. But about 40 miles from home it totally and instantly died on a good grade. Luckily I was able to get mostly off the road. Thought it might be the Crank Position Sensor so I laid down on the hot lava rock and swapped it in. No go. Crank but no start. Fuel is pumping but no start. Long story short - unloaded the Scrambler and got the truck and trailer towed home. Reconfigured our gear to fit in the Scrambler and set out in the heat - no AC or Cruise Control…

It was a hot and loud drive but we made 4 1/2 hours to Lovelock NV for the night. Had to stop at a Walmart to get some noise canceling headphones for my wife. That made a huge difference for her. One more hot day then we should get some relief.

Let’s hope the Scrambler continues to do well. 912 more miles to go!

I know that feeling. I was headed to Michigan. I only had one vehicle so I just stayed home. Think I might have mine solved, but a little to late and farther than that to go.

We did make it to Silverton driving the Scrambler. I'll post more later but we wheeled Wednesday and Thursday with the group and had a blast! Amazing trails and scenery. Dan and everyone else are a great group to wheel with.

I did lose 5th gear on my NV-4500 transmission about 4 hours from Silverton. There is a known issue with the 5th gear nut backing off under heavy towed loads. Since it was a used transmission, we don't know the history of it in the donor truck. I doubt by Jeep worked it that hard. I called a few shops that rebuild them and they said I should be fine if no metal shavings or parts get through the other gears. And to drain it and take off the PTO covers and look for any metal shavings or parts. I did that on the side of the road and found nothing. Ran a magnet around too an it didn't pick anything up. Put the fluid back in and drove to Montrose, CO and got some new compatible fluid from an Amsoil distributor and changed it for good measure. Drove to Silverton fine and wheeled the trails. Still working well - just as a 4-speed. I'm checking the fluid every 5-6 driving hours. Let's hope it holds out until I get home. There is a rebuild kit that has a different shaft that has a locking nut to avoid this in the future. If anyone here has experience with this, let me know what you did.

We are heading to Sun Valley Idaho now. My wife is riding MTB's with some friends. We left Silverton yesterday to break up the 12 hour drive since we are in the Scrambler with no AC. Heading out shortly from our motel in Tremonton UT. About 3.5 hours to go and we'll be there. They are riding Sunday through Wednesday then we start our 12 hour drive back to Redding in the Scrambler.

The large "Park Fire" in Northern California is raging out of control. It's burning into Shasta County where we live. If it shifts West, our house could be in the path after a few more days. So we're keeping an eye on that as well. It's spreading faster than any fire I've seen.

Was texting with my sister in Ashland Oregon and they are dealing with the smoke from that fire.
