i have a 84 cj8 frame that i just picked up. it is in the best condition i have ever ceen a cj frame. i also scored a rolling chassis with a rusted frame from and '83. it is my plan to meld the 2 to make a good cj-8. i also have a cj7 with a 360 that will be a parts donor for most things from the dash forward.

my question is, should i use the 360 or keep the thing semi original and go with a 252. at this point i can go either way. i am undecided.

thanx

Your decision....

I run a 360, I like a bit of power under the hood. The 258 may be like original, but are you trying to do a stock restoration?

not a "true resto" more like a resto mod but dont wanna get too crazy with the "mod" side of it, you know?

How much is gas in your area? Not that 258s are econo-motors, but a 360 will likely suck more gas. Everyone plays the "displacement/power" card, but if this is going to be driven regularly, fuel economy should be considered, too.

BTW, I get 20mpg with my diesel-powered CJ-10a on 34" tires. :D It's not powerful on the highway, but it's nice around town and offroad.

gas right now is 2.70/gal. my 4.0 yj get 14mpg city and 17 hwy. how much worse can the 360 be? it wont be a DD but the wife wants it to drive 2-3 times a week. she just told me this morning that she doesnt want to wheel it much. probably just "trail ride".

My old '76 Chief w/stock 360 got ~10mpg.

360s are not know for their fuel efficiency....

A FSJ is much larger and heavier than a CJ. Also, did it have a manual transmission or the automatic/Quadratrack combo?

I am sure that a CJ with a 360, a manual transmission, and driven reasonably would do a little better.

If fuel economy is a huge priority, something other than a CJ would be a better option.

I vote for the 360. My CJ might get 20mpg with it's little 4 banger, but it is just no fun to drive on the highway. Hopefully the 401/NV4500 project slated for this winter will cure that. :D

i have a 360 from an 87 waggy that i need to use or sell. i would rather use the 360 in the "8" but am unsure. i havea yj so i understand that fuel economy is not an option with a vehicle that has the profile of a barn.

i guess i will just use it.

my 360 odd ball

ok my 360 must be an odd ball.my scramblers got a rebuilt 360, shorty headers with dual pipes.running an tf999 auto.went out 2 weeks ago for a trail run.the tj with 4.0 with same size tank as mine ran low before i had to get fuel.i'm looking at about 18mpg.

I swear the most limiting factor for fuel economy in our rigs is not the engine... It is the body. I have run the AMC 150 stock ratio and got 18-20 consistently, I have run the AMC 258 stock ratio and got 18-20 consistently. Considerable difference in motor, no real difference in fuel use. I would assume the same for a moderately geared and driven 304 and 360...

Well i just recently put a 360 in my Scrambler and so far i like it. I had some issues that turned out to be NOT engine related, cooling related, but that was my own fault. Yup, fuel economy is not something you will get with the 360 but you will have plenty of power if you need it.

Does anyone know if a 6cyl t18/208 combo will bolt upto an auto 360 and what parts do i need to do this swap?

I'm pretty sure it will bolt up, you will need the correct 360 flywheel, clutch kit and a pilot bushing/bearing.
