Hey, all. This is a follow-up of a thread I started a few days ago (thanks again for info on the YJ A/C to my Scrambler). My friend is willing to part with his old A/C that I want to use on my Scrambler for a price I can justify even with missing parts. I will have to buy a compressor. My question is, how was the compressor driven in OEM configurations? I have no unused pulley areas on my main crank pulley and all the used ones are v-pulleys. I am assuming I need a special pulley with a multigroove belt pulley dedicated to the A/C OR the compresor is driven by a v-belt running to one of the other accessories. I have a few repair manuals but none realy show the belting. Can someone explain what the compressor is driven off of? Thanks in advance...my "Bessie" might get A/C after 25 years!

Sincerely,
Valkster

I have a compressor that I think went with a 258 engine. It was in a box of parts in the back of the Scrambler when I bought it. $20 + shipping? I can email a pic if your interested.
I have a 4.0 in the Jeep now that has a compressor. I'm going to try to put a/c in before next summer.

I might take you up on that...could you post a pic? Can you tell me how the thing is supposed to be run? What I mean is, does it have a v-groove pulley on it or a multy-groove flat belt pulley? I cannot find any help on how the systems were integrated into the jeep. If anyone else out there knows of a website with photos showing its mounting, plumbing, etc it would be appreciated.

Sincerely,
Valkster

I'm pretty sure it's a V groove pulley. I can email you a couple of pics if you want to pm me your address. I have hoses too which I don't think I can use with my engine.
I can't help with info on how to set it up.

I also need to know this info. I'm cobbling together a system from parts not all from the same place (they are CJ A/C part though). I've never seen A/C installed and will need help putting it all together.

I just bought a factory manual from ebay and hope to get a compressor. If the manual goes into more details than the Chilton/Haynes "route" then I will let you know.

The compressor really isn't the hard part as it is found in older GM cars and such.....it's the special braket and setting it all up. When my 86 CJ hit 200K miles, I pulled it and tossed the block (bad bore and broken piston skirt). I keep all the rest as it all worked FINE. Transfered it over to another engine block from a burned CJ-8 and rebuilt it. The pics will show you the AC location and belt set up as it came stock in my 86 CJ. Warning.....this set up does not match some OEM tech books....but I've seen other CJs with it as well.

Hey, OnlyinaJeepCJ. Thanks much for the picture. It will surely come in handy. Great looking rebuild, by the way! I hope all goes well when you drop it in.

Hmm- that's exactly opposite of the compressor on the 258 that came out of my Waggy partster. It had the AC on top, alternator below. It was a serpentine belt setup, though. Truck's got dibs on it-

Thanks Robert! I got the compressor a few days ago...it was delivered to the wrong house but now I have it. It seems stuck but a mechanic friend gave me a few things to try to get it working. I will let you know how it goes. I really appreciate it.

Sincerely,
