Hey, all. Can someone tell me if a complete unit from a '91 YJ will fit and look the same as the A/C unit for an '83 Scrambler? A friend removed the unit from his YJ and I am considering buying it for my Srambler. I have kept my Jeep stock and would like to know if the underdash part, and the rest, is the same. Thanks in advance for any help.

Sincerely,
Valkster

Should be pretty close to the same. I've seen some YJ units that had the vents pointed up at the seat instead of being pointed at the knees of the folks sitting in the seats. Better design, but the CJ units point at your knees if you're looking for original.

I swapped over an entire unit from a 94 YJ including the motor. My stock 85 CJ8 did not come from the factory with A/C. Everything in the cab mounted fine. All I have left to do is figure out the electrical wiring and then have the system charged.

Thanks for the quick repy. I appreciate the help.

Sorry, got to disagree. They are VERY different. I have the original AC system out of my late model CJ-7 and swapped in a complete 1991 YJ system. The OEM CJ unit is going into my 83 Scrambler.

Like most auto parts, they love to change the parts over the production run of the model just enough to make them look the same, but they don't interchange. The CJ AC unit is made by American Air and I believe the YJ units are too or from a new version of the same company....too many little signs that they are the same. I compared 3 YJ and one CJ system to gather this info.

The CJ system uses the cone or flair connections through the whole system...like a brake line. The YJ uses O rings. The compressors are different and have different pullies unless you have the serp belt CJ (CA models).
The later YJ underdash unit (91 on) has clips that hold it together and can easly be taken apart and cleaned out. The evap has 90 degree bends that only work with the YJ main lines. The CJ and early YJ units are glued together and don't come apart. Yes the front 3 vents are different too. CJ straight, YJ 45 degree upward. That part can swap between the two. The CJ condenser is a twin tube style and has large side brackets with the dryer attached to the passenger side. The YJ is a serpentine style with a seperate dryer attaching to the passenger inner fender. There is more, but that the main differences.
I swapped in a 94 stroker 4.6 and wanted to have AC. While i could have used adaptors on the compressor, I went with the more efficient YJ system due to the improved condensor. The dash unit matched the compressor and the upward vents are a plus, but I'm torn as they don't look like the ol CJ type. After i searched for months to find a bad CJ condenser to cut the side brackets off of, I modified the YJ condenser with my own brackets to copy the CJ style. There is a universal style at Jeepair.com. I'm still working on it, but have many good pictures if you need them.

Ed,

Pictures would be great. If you wanted to do a write up about the differences and options for putting AC on to include what parts mix and match with pics I will get it posted as a FAQ.

good stuff

diddo.. this is good stuff...

if someone writes it up with some pics in a word doc or anything and sends to me we can get posted permanently in the FAQ.

I'm some what busy right now, but give me a week or two and I can write up a full report of and entire OEM CJ AC system, a complete YJ system (both the 87 to 90 and 91 to 95) and its differences compared to the CJ and interchangablity. Here is a few quick pics. I will take some more side by side pics too. As of right now, the last AC work I nned to do is install the YJ dryer on the CJ inner fender. I'm working on locating it as to not interfere with the TJ air box above it and the AC lines under that...

OEM CJ AC in a 86 Laredo. Worked fine till I pulled the engine at 200K miles.

Tag for "American Air" on top as I pull it and all the dash out.

These are the large side brackets that are part of the CJ condenser. Radiator is out of course.

Here I'm cutting the stock tabs off the YJ unit to prep it for my own new brackets.

I had a local shop bend the plate and I cut it down and bolted together....

Thanks, again, OnlyinaJeepCJ. The pics are beneficial. I have already commited to the YJ unit but you have given me a heads-up on what to do with it. Any more pics as you progress or have time would be appreciated.
