I wanted to change out the 90 amp alt. On my 95 Cherokee 4.0. Ordered a 170 amp Powermaster that showed to fit but no bueno. Case is 130mm and the 90 A is 120mm. Any know of a higher output alt with the smaller case?

Power master has a small and large case alternator. Call their tech line. They actually answer the phone. I’ve been dealing with them about my starter.

I've had nothing but problems with my powermaster starter on my 4.0. I just need to swap back in my old one and be done with it.

Now the conundrum, I called PM when I got the first one and while helpful, didn't mention or suggest the different diameter body to me. Of course I only discovered the issue when repacking it to send back and noted the 130mm on the outside of the box... I really need more power [/timallen] due to the dual elec fans AND AC...

Not sure if this pertains to your situation but this video shows how to remove the brackets from the block and clearance for the alternator to fit.

Seems to be a common issue.

Thanks for sharing that vid. That is basically the issue I had. Have read somewhere that there is a Denso small (120mm) case with higher amperage. Will continue searching once we get back from the Sandblast. I may see if I can get the brackets off to machine. I don't have an endmill, but can grind I guess, if push comes to shove. Might go to a junk yard and find a set of brackets to "learn on"...

Yeah there are several other videos on modifying with a grinder, I just linked this one as it showed how to remove the bracket to modify on a bench.
I like the idea of practicing on a junkyard bracket

Have fun at Sandblast, the gear change should make a big difference.

I’m in a similar position, I just replaced parts on it after only 120 miles on it. It’s working again now, we’ll have to see how it holds up this time. I replaced the pinion gear assembly and removed shims for better gear engagement. If this doesn’t work, I’ll put an old original starter back on.

Wonder if issues with the alternators???

I know I'm late to the party on this but wanted to share some info. I had purchased a high output alternator from these folks for my Jaguar xjs v12. And I've been very happy. I checked their website and they have cj 8 specific alternators. I will be purchasing one in the near future once I figure my anticipated loads .
