AMC 20 advise repair? replace?

Did you remove the spacer block in the diff? My instructions didn't mention that, but it ended up being necessary when I saw the amount of rubbing the ends of the shafts were doing on it. Fixed a leak issue I was having.

I think the spacer only applies to a limited slip carrier.

Didn't remove the spacer block. I hope Bobby is right, I'll be dropping the axle off at the shop tomorrow. I'll ask them about it. Where does it shows up in the diagram?

Okay, buttoned everything back up and took it for a spin! No leaks, no noises, just strong smooth acceleration. Feels great to get this job done. Thanks for everyone's help. Just to recap, I replaced spider gears, limited slip clutches, new carrier bearings, installed one piece axles (new bearings, seals) and brake wheel cylinders.

I did have a couple obstacles during this project.

1) Getting the belleville washer compressed enough to rotate the new spider gears into place. I broke a 3/8 bolt and cupped two stacks of washers. Ended up using a 1/2 bolt with heavier washers. Still had a very tough time getting the gears rotated in place. Then, you had to get washers behind each gear! With grease, a pry-bar compressing the other belleville washer and some force, I was able to get them in place. The online instructions I followed showed pushing washers out with a feeler gauge. Did not happen that way for me. Link to instructions http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f8/howto-amc-20-oem-trac-lok-dismount-mount-1232492/

2) Getting the carrier assembly back into the housing. On my rear-end the ring and pinion shims went on the outside of each bearing race. The shims are a very tight fit, the AMC manual shows a special tool used to open up the housing to get everything in place. So for me it was, laying on my back with the rear end inches away from the gas tank, trying to push a carrier, two bearing races, and two shims in place. It was a long wrestling match. Once I finally was able to get everything semi wedged into place, I able to get the carrier/bearing straps started. Then I could tighten the straps to push everything into place. This image is not mine, but it illustrates what I'm describing.

Thanks again for the folks on the forum who helped this rookie mechanic through this repair.

Glad to hear it:thumbsup::cheers:

IIRC, I think I used a piece of 5/8 threaded rod, no problems:smokin:
