I decided to install my one piece axles that I bought six months ago. Reading the instructions step #2 says to verify that you do not have a Power Lock differential. If you do, do not install this kit. Sure enough I have it. The code stamped on the differential is DD which stands for 2:73 gearing with Power Lock limited slip. Here is the problem. I have called three different company's and no one I have spoke to knows what the difference is, just that their instructions say do not install this kit in a power lock. I've been reading this forum for years and I can't remember ever seeing this topic before. Does anyone have a answer? Preferably a right answer. LOL

I did have the same AMC-20 stamped DD in mine and installed Yukon 1piece axles, but I upgraded the gears and carrier/LSD with a Detroit TruTrac.

To answer your question here is some more info from Ten Factory.

"Check for a “PowerLock” differential. If there are 4 spider gears, and the differential case is bolted together, it is a PowerLock. If it is a PowerLock, call TEN Factory for instructions. A differential with a PowerLock unit requires different length axles, which may or may not be available. If there is not a PowerLock installed in your differential, continue with the installation.?

My Green Scrambler came with the factory "Trac-Lock" LSD, and I installed Moser 1 piece axles. BUT, you must remove the "centering block" in the differential, post #30:

Another useful link:

And another:

The "DD" means "Trak - Lok", not Powerlock, big difference :twocents:

IIRC the thrust block needs to come out but then you can use the 1 piece axles.

I installed a set of MOSER 1 piece years ago in my AMC 20 with a Lock Right locker. Just rereading instructions now and that is step 1 and if you have power lock unit the replacement axels are short for this installation and to call MOSER

I think the confusion is Power lock and Trak loc are two completely different animals. With Power lock it seems you need to remove the thrust block but not with Trak loc.

1980's era CJ's never came from the factory with Power Lock limited slips, only Trak Lock limited slip diffs, thats what DD means, 2.73 Trak Lock. Someone could have swapped in a power lock later on, not sure they ever made Power Locks for AMC 20 axles?? Not sure if Power Locks have the center thrust block, but I know the factory Trak Locks do, and they can interfere, I've had to remove two of them. Take a picture of the differential Carrier, that will clear things up

I think the block has to come out for all 1 piece installs. If you leave it in you'll have to go through the whole shimming process, which can be avoided with the block out.

Finished it and I did take the block out. As always thanks for all the help.
