Got some lower end seal kits, some new solenoid covers, and a new polishing wheel. Now all I need is some time...I'm working on that problem...:fingerscrossed::woohoo:
 
going to follow this one to see Randy's work. I hope to put a winch on mine next year.
 
Well I came across an ad on CL the other day for a working 8274 AND another parts 8274. $400 for both. Mom was going to be in the area of the seller today so he's meeting her and going to load them in her car. If I can ever get the top housing for my existing one back (guy is supposed to be welding a crack up for me) and assuming the parts winch is in good shape I'll have an 8274 for all three Jeeps!

Couple of questions for Randyzzz or anyone else here who has done these....

I LOVE the look of that polished top housing. What would one use to get that look? I figure I'll tear these two new ones down and put new bushings in the bottom, paint the end housings and the spool, polish the top housing, put a Joe West sticker on, and get another metal solenoid cover. Looks like the parts winch is missing the solenoid mount/solenoids, but I just happen to have an extra bracket with solenoids.

Gonna need a new cable too
Randy, where are you getting your cable and how much are you paying for it? I think I'm going to stick with steel and a Warn 5/16 at 150ft runs about $135 plus shipping. I can get cable MUCH cheaper elsewhere, but I know not all cable is created equal, so what are you guys running and where are you getting it?
 
I painted mine with a grey wheel paint, then put a roloc 3M pad on my 90 degree angle grinder and "polished" the ridges on the top housing (removing the paint from the ridges) then sprayed the whole thing with clear to keep the aluminum from oxidizing. I really like the way it turned out. Added the Joe West sticker too just as the cherry on top. It wound up looking like the new 8274's but it's an old one. You can see it in the picture I posted on page one of this thread.
 
Polishing the upper housing starts with fine sandpaper to remove any blemishes, working up to 1000 grit if needed. Then a lot of time with a big buffing wheel on my bench grinder and polishing rouge, ending up with some Mothers or similar polish. The big wheel on a bench grinder is the secret to making it go quick.

I have a local shop for synthetic winch rope, there are a couple of good ones on line too. My local guy does cable too, but I've never priced it out...seems there's always someone with a good used cable that's upgrading to synthetic. I just passed up a 100' of 3/8 for $50.00...
