Cool vehicles we used to own

Well, I’m back from a good dinner and a few beers. Still sad the bus didn’t work out. Also, on the way home I happened to drive my the Jeepster I always said would be mine…and it’s gone too. Oh well, I have mine.

Truck, as far as a stupid low offer, I thought about offering $2k, but I quickly realized that I really didn’t want to deal with the roached out thing and kept quiet. I’ve already got enough rust to deal with in my Jeepster. Remember, I’m the guy that hates rust…

I told my wife that I didn’t think she realized how dangerous the drive home was. She said she didn’t understand. I told her “I have 6 grand cash and an empty car trailer. Tell me how that could go bad in a hurry!” She got it. 🤣🍺

I had a feeling it was the VW Bus. ;)

It's too bad the trip was a bust, but it sounds like you dodged a bullet with the condition. It's almost impossible to find one without rust anymore. :(

I did find a nice one in CA by Castro Valley. It was fully restored and probably a deal at $22k. But I can’t justify that money. This years stock market drop has just about killed my discretionary income.

A whole bunch of Jeeps over the years so I won’t post all those. Currently have some cool stuff in my mind. But the first car that I no longer own that came to mind when I saw this thread…

68 Plymouth Sport Fury convertible. Had a built 440 and 727 auto in it. Slapped some Foose wheels on it and drove it. She was a big girl but everyone loved that car. I do miss it but glad I sold it

Here goes…photo dump time. I’ve already posted some of these pics but here they all are just to keep it all together.

This was a 67 Bronco. Almost ended our marriage. I bought this shortly after we were married ( we were young, I was 19 she was 16). I had to replace every mechanical component on it. Ended up with a solid lifter hi-po 289, custom adapted top loader 4 speed, lower gear transfer case, and 4.11 gears in the rear 9” and D44 front. Fast and fun.

Keeping with the Bronco thing, here’s my 78. 400 engine, 36” tires, super clean 61519E28-CFF2-4970-9720-EFD26006FEC8.jpeg

And lastly my 86. Had a built 302 with Comp Cams shaft and valve train, and a Rancho long-arm suspension. I used to jump this thing all the time. Had a sticker on the back-
“Have you flown in a Ford lately?” This is at a local monster truck show when we lived in Utah. The second pic is right before I sold it. I loved that truck.6A7B2765-74AF-448D-8805-DBAFD31C843A.jpeg25447F08-177B-4BEB-8E29-8BB313524A9E.jpeg

Early on I had a Datsun 720 pickup. It had the L20 engine and I tricked it out. Yep- lights on the roll bar. 126C3010-5773-4392-A9C9-387525FE2131.jpeg

There was also an 84 Toyota pickup. I bought this new, off the showroom floor. Added Supra seats and sound system…and it got stolen, never to be seen again. 0845DA32-55B1-4EB0-8C64-E77B461A9272.jpeg

This is my 74 K5 Blazer. It was an ex Forest Service rig- painted sea foam green. Came in handy many times- I was luckily mistaken for Forest Service and ignored when I was off-road in areas I shouldn’t have been. Yeah, young and dumb. 424C71AE-DC7A-4B37-94CF-3E7B2E1ED511.jpeg

One of my first vehicles was a 1978 Mustang II King Cobra. I removed all the stickers right after I bought it. I spent countless hours cruising Van Nuys Blvd on Wednesday nights. Met my wife with this car. I blew up the transmission a couple of times under warranty- but as soon as the warranty expired, I built the engine and had an A-1 trans installed. It was fast, I went through a set of rear tires monthly. When “The Fast and the Furious” came out, I thought for sure they copied the driving antics from my friends and I. We terrorized the San Fernando Valley and Mulhullond Blvd and street raced everywhere. I got in a LOT of trouble, wrecked it twice, and eventually sold it... Bought trucks from them on- the 67 Bronco replaced it. E8519C13-F730-47B1-83C1-4BA6698A47D6.jpeg

In 1985 I bought a new S10 Blazer to replace the stolen Toyota. 2.8v6, BW 4 speed, and all the HD options at the time. It was a special order that was refused and I got a deal. All the good stuff but manual windows, vinyl floors, and vinyl seats. Perfect. It got a lift, 31” tires, Edelbrock performance package, and was a really fun, reliable truck for the 120k miles I had it. Everyone thinks these are crap- mine was great. 237C0D6C-E9EA-4C94-9D08-77B57C7B78B2.jpeg

At 10 pictures per post this might take a few…and I haven’t gotten my slides transferred yet!

I bought a new Ranger STX in 1994. Nice truck but slower than molasses with the 4.0 and auto trans. E4CA5B54-61DD-44C4-8ED0-41FBCA7F8BBA.jpeg

And in 1998 I bought a new Silverado Z71. This was a great truck, pics are from an outing on Pismo Beach. That’s Comp Hill that I was tearing up. C45C7299-B6A1-459D-A16F-A128CC0446C0.jpegEC7790DE-EB06-4992-8D5D-8AB444FC7AFF.jpeg

As you can see, I’m really out of chronological order- hope no one cares.

For a while we had a 3/4 ton 2wd 1990 Suburban. It had a big block and was a beast. I managed to fit 33x12.5x16.5 tires on it- loved the look. ( Are those wheels starting to look familiar?) I repainted it, but ended up selling it when we needed 4WD after moving to Oregon. 9870BF64-BEAC-4A63-8135-90BE69F3D0B1.jpeg

Another fun one was this little Mitsubishi Montero. I was working at a Dodge dealer and this and a CJ-7 were traded in. Both were $1000 and my co-worker who had seniority wanted the CJ. It worked out well- the CJ blew the engine in a week. The Monty had a John Baker custom suspension and was another of my all-time favorite vehicles. 607FAD39-FD9B-481E-8BB5-1D7AE0B750CF.jpeg

I found this FSJ while driving around. Rang the doorbell and got it for $400. It needed a water pump and I drove it for a while. Traded the quadratrack for a D20 case. That was a pain. Unfortunately, there was just too much rust on the body for me, and I sold it. 742E6D4F-D863-4431-8C1B-7967C5FA7587.jpeg

My 55 Willys was one of my first major projects. I learned to weld on this. It had a fully boxed Willys Wagon frame, Wagoneer springs and axles, shackle reversal, Chev 350, SM 420 and a D18 case. I sold it before it was finished.

And here’s the 70 Jeepster. Another one I loved, but I had to choose between it and Copper, my 82 Scrambler. But now I have another Jeepster 5E4E41D1-FD33-493A-B374-F9F1B1636BD5.jpeg

So that’s it for now. I’ll find my slide scanner and my backup disc with the rest of the pics on it.

Awesome pics and stories Randy. Loved the first gen Bronco and the Full Size Broncos. I loved my 96. Would love to have been able to keep it. But it did not fit the family needs at the time. And was not in a position then to keep extra vehicles (unlike now).

A few jeeps from the past…….

The 8 was an 82 and the 7 was an 83. Both original paint.

Awesome Jeeps. Have you held on to a favorite? If not, do you think you will one day?

I graduated high school in 1987 and I would have killed to have that. My metal, punk, new wave, and grateful dead would have been blasting out of that beauty.

Funny you ask……I recently purchased my 85 scrambler back a few months ago. Believe it or not I am the 2nd, 4th, and now 6th owner. This is what it looked like the day I bought it from the original owner. 535DA2AF-C310-4F34-8247-3A601DC8C0E5.jpeg
Several years later and a lot of work it looks like this now.

Here's my '79 Hilux I had in high school. This was my first car. I bought it in 1984 with 17000 miles and totally stock.
Next is my 1984 HJ47 troopy I had for 15 years.
Finally, my YJ I bought brand new in 1994.

All vehicles regularly blasted the Dead.

Any interesting current vehicles (granted, not many modern cars are "interesting" by any stretch of the imagination)?

I'm really fond of the engine in my Silverado and my wife's Tahoe. The 3 litre diesel LM2 is simply a fantastic motor. The automatic Ford/Chevy 10L80E gear box leaves a lot to be desired, especially while towing. But the power and economy are stunning.

The massive screen on the dash is maddeningly huge with every conceivable icon on it to distract you while driving. The back up camera cannot be dimmed, meaning backing up at night requires covering the screen with a t-shirt to see the mirrors.

I'm not sure I'll ever look back on them as 'greatest cars', but I hope my kids will have found memories of them. I think the days of keeping new cars to hand down are behind us.

Not a current vehicle, but I currently own it. 1949 Willys 3a
