If you like great fresh jerky or pepperoni, there is a small store that’s well known there in town in Sisters. They also make really good sandwiches. Can’t remember the name, but Sisters is very small.

Just in case anyone is interested, first tank, some city, mostly highway saw 20.6 mpg. This tank, 60% wheeling but a full charge for the first bit was 12.9 mpg.

Overall about 60% of what my silverado gets.

Just for fun, I stopped on 14° pitch to see how she got started from a stop at that angle. In 4 high she couldn't do it, the trans just spun and spun and got up to 215° pretty quickly. In 4 low it went fine but it took a good deal of throttle.

Realised esave is different from the regenerative braking. I was not using esave. That uses only petrol and saves electricity for when you want it (doesn't shut off the engine).

Interesting that the rental owner claims electric bill was “skyrocketing“. The total battery capacity is 17kwh, however you can only use 14kwh, the remaining 3 are always there for reserve. For me and Texas electric rates, it costs about $1.25 to charge from dead to full battery. I assume CA rates are 3x Texas, so at most, it would be $4 each charge. I think they were monitoring cameras and not the electric bill.

Assuming you were charging with the level 1 charger (120v) it would take 12 hours to get a full charge. The included level 1 charger is a joke.

No need to use the regenerative button for braking if you don’t want to. Just using the service brakes does the same thing. The hydraulic brakes are only used when the motor generators can’t provide enough slowing power.

For MPG, I am getting a dash indicated 50 - 55 MPGe per tank, and my usual miles per tank of gas is around 2,000 miles. If on a long trip that exceeds the battery capacity, I get about 20 - 23 mpg. That said, I think it is a great commuter vehicle if the charging pattern fits your commute. I drive 22 miles one way to work and can charge at work. On an average day I never use the ICE. If your daily usage does not fall into that category, the 2.0T or the 3.6 would probably be a better choice. I can get 25 miles on a single charge without trying too hard (City miles, not highway or off-road)

Also, for clarification on battery placement, the battery is inside the passenger compartment under the back seat. What is under the vehicle is the gas tank on the right side and the battery cooling/heating system on the left side. Both are protected by decent skid plates.
 
I totally agree and in your situation I would buy the same car. It really is a great vehicle for commuting et cetera. The last three days I have been using it far beyond what it was intended for.

Having said that however I really enjoyed driving it and the power is great so long as the battery has juice.

We're doing a couple of roadtrips so I'll be able to see what the fuel economy is on just highway. Interestingly, for my mixed driving first tank it matched what the dashboard said of twenty point six miles per gallon. The funny thing was however the second tank with all of the four wheeling said fuel economy was eighteen point four but it was significantly lower.

But I can't imagine how it could predict that and get it accurate given. How much the engine was off and on constantly on ups and downs.
 
I just looked out front and there are little cameras. I bet you're right. I'm really over the modern society.
 
the property manager just called this morning because the electric was apparently skyrocketing and asked whether we were charging a tesla.
I would have just replied “no, we are not charging a TESLA."
 
The take away from a ninety mile route around lake tahoe and along the towns that surround it Is that you want to make sure your battery is fully charged before you head out on a trip.

The best I could manage on the car indicated was about twenty miles per gallon. The actual fuel economy was 20.2.

It’s been over 50 years since I have driven around the lake as a young teenager. I can’t even imagine the build up of the place. Drove down and back from southern Oregon. Beautiful country the whole way.

Just as stunning as last time I was here in the 90s, except REALLY built up and largely Spanish- speaking. Now it feels a lot like Northern Italy as far as the build up.

Hiked up from Squaw Valley (now called 'Palisades Tahoe' due to offended folks in San Francisco) up to Squaw peak and took the tram down. Took about 3.5 hours and climbed 3000', and so great.

Ok, for what it's worth to those interested in the 4Xe, I drove it 1688 miles over 3 weeks. About 65 of those miles were off road, maybe 20 were pretty challenging for a stock rig.

I charged the rig only twice, so every bit of driving for the most part was petrol and never stop-and-go. One off-road trip used up one of those charges (VERY quickly off road), so really I ran 99% petrol.

Over 1688 miles I used 81.15 gallons, so 20.8 mpg average over those miles. The computer pretty consistently said I was averaging 22-24 mpg. I rarely used the air con, so I'm not sure what the impact of that would be.

Overall, I have to say I really wasn't impressed with the drive train. I loved the Jeep and really enjoyed driving it ( two pedals aside), but the drivetrain really was underwhelming; reminding me of my first new car: a 1993 YJ 4 cyl 5 speed.

Obviously it is designed to be an electric car. In pure electric it actually is fun to drive and had a bit more power. Driving it as a short commuter, a car for just around town or for very short trips I think it would be fine. But as a daily driver without plugging it in, it leaves much to be desired.

The 2 litre is pretty underpowered and (at least it seems to me) is fairly thirsty. The engine turns off and on almost incessantly: in the mountains and in town- constantly, on the highway only on downhills or when you let off the throttle. There is a noticable surge, similar to an auto downshifting, when the engine kicks in.

I'm not sure how it compares to the 392 or the diesel, but my wife's Tahoe diesel 4wd averaged 31.7 on the tank we used to and from the airport. My Silverado diesel 4wd long bed High Country with tow mirrors has averaged nearly 27 mpg over 53,000 miles. My friend here in fla has a 2021 wrangler 4 door 6 speed manual which he only drives in the city and told me he averages 18 mpg. For all the complexity of that hybrid system, I really expected better fuel economy.

I would foresee MANY issues as these age.
 
I think that is a fairly accurate review. Only difference of opinion I have is power. I think it is just adequate on electricity only, but when both are combined it has an abundance of power. They way these work there are very few circumstances where you don’t have full motor and engine power available. To not have full motor power available you would need to ascend a long grade and deplete the ‘reserve’ capacity of the battery. When the dash indicates <1% battery, there might be as much as 15% of the real battery capacity left. In hybrid mode, the vehicle will use this 15% for optimal performance (acceleration or economy).

I hope these don’t become maintenance nightmares in the future, if they do I will V-8 swap mine. Right now about 40% of wranglers sold are 4xe models. I personally think fleet sales of rentals is skewing this number.

I currently have 8,700 miles on mine with about 2,300 on ICE, the rest are on motor. If it had 50 miles of range on a charge, I would have under 1,000 miles on my engine.
