Driving Scrambler from California to Kansas

Really cool thread guys. Glad to see you today. Bet your own beds felt good. Congrats on your journey. Mike

The trip is over we are back in Thayer, KS.

1900 and some odd miles without any major problems.
Unbelievable for a Scrambler that has been stored for the last 7 or 8 years.
At least we think so!

Pulled out of Hays, KS around 7 am headed to Abilene to look at a trailer.
Scrambler was running a little sluggish so we stopped at a rest area to change inline fuel filter. While under Scrambler I grabbed the rear drive shaft to check u-joints and the whole transmission and transfer case moved. Had dad hand me wrench that was handy to pry up on the trans to see what the deal was. While doing that I tried to use the other hand for leverage. So what did my dumb a$$ grab to use for leverage the super hot muffler, I could here the skin sizzling, oh man what pain. Started shouting for dad to give me something cold, the closest thing to him was a can of deicer, and I just held out my hand and let him spray until he got ice out of the chest. After the pain subsided a bit we figured out that the bolt for the trans mount were sheared off. So we got a couple of ratchet straps and secured it around the skid plate and across to the frame. Seemed to help some and it got us home.

After looking at trailers in Abilene we headed to Junction City, KS to meet up with Phil (dadscj8). We were still having some fuel issues and went Phil’s buddies shop to see if we could do anything for it. We blowed some air thru the carb hoping to dislodge any rust, we had pretty much tried everything else we could think of. It was still running but at about 55 mph top speed, better than walking or pushing it. We ate lunch with Phil and then off towards home with on more stop on the list, 4x4 Land in Topeka, KS to see Mike (scrangler). Spent about and hour there talking Scramblers.

Pulled into Thayer, KS around 6 pm local time.
With our latest Scrambler we believe Thayer is now the Scrambler Capitol of the World (per capita). Population 500 and 6 Scramblers (all ours) equals 1 Scrambler for every 83rd person.

Congrats to you Ken and Jason. What an awsome trip, almost as good as Lewis and Clark. At any rate, it was a journey to be remembered. Thanks for stopping in Salt Lake, it was great to see you guys. I will look forward to seeing the progress on the Scrambler, as you restore it to whatever.

Very cool trip Jason. You'll remember this one for a long time. Thanks for the pics. I was wondering what the deal was with the ratchet strap.
We missed you guys in Clayton.

I just want to add one more story about our trip. Actually it happened at the start of our trip in the Oklahoma City airport terminal. My wife dropped Jason and I off at the airport Sunday around 3:30 PM for a 10:30 PM flight. We thought we could check our luggage and go on in to the gates, find a TV and watch a football game. Wrong. We were told we could not check through until 8:00 PM. So we set around in the terminal 4½ hours with our luggage and no ball game. Finally our ticket window opened and we got in line. When it came our turn, Jason informed the ticket clerk that he had a firearm to declare. The clerk is a new hire and did not know what to do. She asked the other clerk what to do. She is told that a few forms are to be filled out and she is to check the firearm to make sure it is not loaded. So as Jason is filling out forms, I noticed people behind us did not have a clue what was going on and appeared to be irritated because it was taking us so long. When the forms are complete Jason opens his luggage, pulls out a box and lays it on the counter and unlocks it. He pulls out his pistol, click, click, and opens the chamber to show the clerk that it is unloaded. People behind us got quite, some quickly moved to another line, the clerk with big eyes said `I’ll take your word for it’. Jason locks it back in the box and puts it in his luggage. Then this clerk inquires to the other clerk what she was to do with one of the forms. Guess what, the form was to be put in the locked box with the firearm. So Jason has to open luggage, unlock the box, put in the form, lock the box and put it back in the luggage. We finally get our luggage checked and our boarding passes and were headed to the boarding gate. Wrong again. The other clerk informs us that we can’t go to the gate until our luggage has cleared the luggage area. So after another 15 minutes of waiting we finally got to go to the gate area. Fortunatly there was a bar still open and we had time to drink a $5.00 beer before boarding.

Good updates of the trip. Look forward to seeing it in person. I'm sure that there is a lot more to be told around the campfire someday. Welcome back to Kansas!

Kinda bummed all our old pictures have disappeared (screw you Photobucket).

This old Scrambler is still around.

Knocked the dust off our original 81 triple black Laredo for our towns 110th annual Watermelon Homecoming car show.
They surprised us by having it on the dash plaque. Also placed in the top 40.

Ran across 2 of these tags in the parents basement awhile back. Envelopes postmarked 1973, tags appear to have been never installed.

Mom, Sharon Adams doesn't recall them.

I'm thinking since these predate my brother Clif Adams birth, that the KSJA = Ken, Sharon, Jason Adams.

Thought it appropriate to put one on the 1981 Scrambler dad, Ken Adams and I drove back from California a few years back
