Driving Scrambler from California to Kansas

Another long day at shop working on the Scrambler.
After pricing overnighting a tank and sending unit ($314 - $114 of that for shipping) and not being able to find anything local we decided to try and clean what we had. Oh baby what a chore! (see pics).We flushed the tank with water then added a bunch of rocks to help remove scale rust. Then cleaned with every know solvent to man, sucked rocks out with shop vac, dumped a bottle of alcohol to remove remaining water.
While all this was going on we tried running off auxiliary tank and still didn’t feel the Scrambler was running right. We took it to a shop and had a diagnostic ran on it. They said we had something wrong in the #2 cyl, so off came the valve cover and what did we find a rocker arm very loose and a bent push rod. Luckily after several calls to the parts stores we found one push rod in stock, all right things are looking up. Got every thing back together under the hood and the fuel tank back in and hooked up. Went to fire it up and some god awful noise from the engine, thought we were done for sure at this point what else could go wrong. So off came the valve cover and after some further checking we found the valve hung up just where we put the new push rod in (I know we do everything the hard way and a$$ backwards). Thank goodness cousin Rick has many tools and we were able to get the valve freed up. We cranked the engine to make sure all was functioning before valve cover went back on. Once again all looked good so we fire the baby up and it purred like kitten. So out we went for a test drive, wow what a difference, we even got brave and put it on the interstate it zipped wright along.
We now have to get all our crap packed in the Scrambler and plan to head out about 7am Friday morning. We hope to find some Internet along the way so stay tuned.

I would have found a fuel cell at the local racer shop and strapped that baby in the bed area. YOu wouldn't have a fuel gauge but a stick would work though. I would trust the existing tank as far as I could throw it even being cleaned from the pics I saw. Are you sure that the valve didn't stick in the guide from the old fuel(which caused the bent pushrod)? That's not uncommon to happen with stale fuel.

Jack we made it to Battle Mtn tonite and plan to leave about 7am Saturday morning. It is around 300 miles to SLC, that should put in between noon and 1 baring any problems. Was wondering if there is some place on the East side of SLC just off I-80 we could meet and have lunch?Jaxk said:

Boy was it finally nice to get on the road.
Everything went great today, managed to get to Battle Mountain, NV. 470 miles
Scrambler was running great and seemed to like crusing around 65 to 70 and handles pretty well.
We were going to stop and say high to Mark (RenoLaw) but missed the turn
and didn't want to fight rush hour traffic to go back. Thanks for being a contact for us Mark.

We are in Rock Springs, WY for the nite. 480 miles today.
Saturday October 21, 2006
Changed inline fuel filter, checked fluids and left Battle Mountain, NV. Around 7:30 am
Scrambler was running good at low speeds but couldn’t get much above 55 mph.
After it was running so good the day before we knew something was wrong. We stopped after about 15 miles to check and make sure I had the flow for the filter the right direction, it was okay, so then we decided to change the filter at the carb and away we went. Still not running up to par we stopped at the next town to look for some place with a air hose and blow nozzle to blow air back thru the tank thinking that the screen filter in the tank might be plugged. While in town bought more filters and 6 ft of fuel hose to run directly to our 5 gallon gas can. Well blowing thru the tank didn’t help so we stopped after a few miles and hooked up the gas can. Once again no change, pulled off at the next truck stop and pulled plugs they all looked fine. Then dad got to messing with the PVC valve and hoses and noticed it to be loose and not fitting tight enough to keep vacuum. We put some duct tape on the PVC valve to take up the slack. Low and behold it was running like a champ once again. It only took 3.5 to 4 hours to get the days first 100 miles.
Breezing down I-80 towards SLC (Salt Lake City) we called to see if Jack Head (Jaxk) wanted to meet up somewhere, we decided on a local Wendy’s. Also called Brett Davis (Maverick) and Tom Campbell (Tom C) they had all offered to lend a hand if needed.
Brett was busy and never got in touch with Tom. Thanks guys it was awesome to know there was help out there if needed.
We rolled into SLC around 3:30 and met Jack. Showed the off Scrambler to Jack and went into Wendy’s and got a burger, Jack’s treat, THANKS JACK! Jack offered to put us up but we thought it be best to get on down the road. Fueled up and back on the road around 5pm.
Pretty uneventful the rest of the day, Scrambler cruised great right down the road we even hit 80 once on a big downhill grade. We are very impressed with fuel mileage, we are getting right around 19 mpg. That 4 banger may stay in there. We are just about at the half way point, hope to get close to the Kansas border Sunday night.

We are back in Kansas, 690 miles traveled today.
Scrambler ran great and we had a nice little wind pushing us.
Went thru Cheyenne and just missed Dennis (Wyoming) by about 25 minutes.
Thanks Dennis for offering to help us out.
We are staying the night in Hays, KS only about 5 hours from home but we are wiped out. Will hit the road again early in the morning and hope to meet up with Phil (dadscj8) in Junction City and swing by and see Mike (Scrangler) at 4x4Land in Topeka.
So far we have been blessed on our adventure

It was good to see you guys, thanks for lunch too! We should have taken some pics in the city park, a little more scenic than the pizza hut parking lot, lol! Didn't think about it till we drove off!
