Yep but then you need to decide why you are buying and be practical on it's use. I've seen nice minty originals purchased to drive and a beautiful example was down to driver status in a few years. If I gor a screaming deal again on a mint original and didn't have the space to store it for investment purposes I would spin it straight away.

I do the opposite with NOS, I put it on my keeper jeeps. If I was selling one, 9 out of 10 buyers would not care that the dash gauges are Chinese or the push pull cables last 3 days. I hear ya Dave and I think we are on the same page as far as originality and mourning. :). And as far as having fun, I run my 82 Laredo about 100 miles a year to keep things fresh and others get careful driving at a better rate. This morning I took the tan CJ with 130k on it and a rattle can paint job. Mainly because it was 6 degrees and inside..

Yep, everytime I pull dad's Scrambler out I worry about some idiot hitting me. Just put new BFG's on it and they will likely rot before I ever wear them out. I drive it 30 miles each way to work about every 2-3 months to charge the battery, run a little fuel out and top off with fresh, and keep everything moving.

If you love the vehicle it would kill you not to drive it. I put about 500 a year each on my old cars and Jeep. I love to drive them, that is why I have them. You cnat enjoy them in a garage. If you can, its an investment.

And it does kill me to get rock chips and such, but that is why i have the vehicle, not to show off i have it and brag, but to drive.

That's why I am honestly glad my Vette doesn't have the original engine. The original owner, my wife's uncle, swaped it out in the early 70s for a mildly built 327 out of a '66 Impala. Back then it made more sense to pay someone to build another engine and swap out so as to not have the car down for a long time since it was his daily driver. It still appraised at a decent amount but nothing like what it would be if all original. My wife and I drive the heck outta it in the Summer and enjoy every mile we put on it. I also didn't mind adding some more power during the rebuild a year ago. It's funny how many times we have folks walk up and say things like "I know a guy who has a C2 but it never leaves the garage". That would make me sad.

A guy I met at a car show last year told me he had 2 Vettes. Same year and same color. One he did all the things he wants to do the Vette and drives it to all the shows but still babies it. It was beautiful. The other is an all original car that he drives once or twice a year. It kills him not to drive it and kills him to drive it. He called it his garage investment. It just sits there and makes him money, but he cant enjoy it until he cashes it in.

I don't really think any one that is not driven is only called an "investment". As u say u only cash in if you sell. They are moreso collectibles, passions, stories, rarities, sentimental parts of a family, more.

And Karl u are dang close to almost not driving at 500 miles a year. :) So I think we are all in agreement here and also all situations are different. A scrambler with 5k original miles is not in best interest to drive 2k miles a year. And if its driven 100 miles a year it's still not a situation that KILLS a man  Id just be happy to look at it. Maintaining it and preserving it mixed in with sunday drives...whats wrong with that. A scrambler with 5k original miles represents a population of less than 1%. Think about that.

Well said Eric. While I love driving the Scrambler, if I'm going to beat on a Jeep I take one of my '7s. On the one hand I feel like I should drive the Scrambler as it was meant to be driven, and on the other I want to preserve it.

That said, I do intend to gradually modifiy it. I know that gets an "AHHHHH" from most here, but I'll do it in a way that hopefully will not change it where it cannot be put back to stock.

OEM new take off white spokes with caps (originally had solid steel wheels with 205's, they are in my shed and still in great shape)
Aluminum valve cover (Jeep logo)
MC carb (on standby if the BBD ever gives issues)
Team Rush with Blaster canister coil
Conferr shackles (think they are maybe 3/4" longer than stock, maybe not even that much)
Rock sliders (custom designed by Scott Anderson to sandwich the frame so they don't require drilling, look like Warrior Products' "Rock Barz")
Custom rear bumper with swingout carrier, frame mounted, no drilling (made by Scott Anderson)
Tuffy console (going to try to make a _]--[_ bracket that uses the seat belt holes to mount it, so I don't have to drill the floors)
Winch (8274 of course, with period correct mounting plate)
Warn hubs
I really think I might pull the stock axles and slap a whole set of WT's with 3.31's in there so I can run some kind of truetrac or lunchbox lockers. Has 2.73's with tracloc now. Keep the stock axles (as is) in the shop
have a full length ACME top for it, and a back seat (would require removing never removed hardtop, bulkhead, and floor plugs for seat mounting hardware, so I'm  on that)
factory rocker trim (from Rudy), will require drilling holes (how do I keep those holes from being a potential place for rust? Paint the edges with clear coat and a little brush or ??)
Laredo wheel from JerseyJeeps with NOS horn cap
Laredo grab bar (already on)
NOS AM/FM/CB player for dash (will be single CD and IPOD hookup in the Tuffy that is FM modulated so it will play through OEM radio)
Bestop seat covers (to cover the mint Honey seats). I've thought about pulling the seats and putting used ones in there since with covers it makes no difference appearance wise..

All of the above can be put back to stock. I'll of course save anything that is removed (still have the AMC marked hoses and belts I replaced a few years ago simply because of age)

That way it can be MY Jeep, BUT, in the event that my kids or grandkids have no interest in Jeeps whatsoever, they can put it back to almost 100% original (exception being things like the holes drilled for rocker trim) and sell it somewhere like Barret Jackson.

I know as long as I'm alive and able to work the Scrambler will be in my family. As Eric stated, sometimes it's a sentimental part of the family......

I understand Eric. But, I have 4 old cars and 2 newer ones and a motorcycle, and with 2 young kids that need child seats, 500 on each is pretty good during the nice weather.

I think most, but not all that dont want to put miles on their vehicles is because of one reason, value goes down. Value goes down with dents, scratches and mileage. If that is the case, then it is an investment. That is what i meant. You said it best, why put 2k on a Jeep that has 5k? Because the value decreases. Everyone can do what they want, but they are vehicles and made to drive. Just be careful driving them. My 2 cents.

I must have to bite the bullet and become a paid member--will pursue....

Yes, that will do it. Come on over from the Dark Side. I can assure you that I have to edit almost every one of my posts after I submit it and it works great :banghead:

well a new "Tiger Top" is $1100 http://www.4wd.com/Jeep-Tops-Jeep-T...spx?t_c=75&t_s=459&t_pt=3382&t_pn=BST52309-01

the whitco is wayyyyyyyyyy better quality so how does the price seem high for a better quality piece in a unique colour that you can't get anywhere??????

That's the top for an 8 and not a 7. The 7 top is $835 for the Tiger Top (which includes hardware). You should be comparing it to the replace-a-top which is $573 for black. Bestop is making this in blue denim for a limited run. CB is selling them for <$900. So one might think $2000 is a bit high.

LOL....sorry about that....my brain is stuck in scrambler mode....

but's its still worth double if it's original IMHO

The Scout is my beater.
The Scrambler. The 09 ZR1 and the Hummer H1 get rotated a driven about 1,000 miles a year each.
Otherwise I drive a Chevy Avalanche.
