Fitz's Scrambler Rebuild

Well after 2.5 years of work, stopping tracking the expenditures at around $18,000, and owning almost every color 1/2 soft top (except garnet red), assembling the worlds most complete Levi's Denim Blue interior and tops collection, and two full-soft tops too, I have been having a blast driving my 1983 Scrambler around.

I had a pretty good donor and was able to salvage, swap, core and sell many parts for reuse, but for the most part took it down to the frame and either rebuilt, reconditioned or replaced anything that was suspect. The only thing not to be rebuilt was the Dana 300 or T-176, still going strong!!

But some of the majors:
-Rebuilt 258, bored .40 over
-Weber carb
-Original 2.73 axles rebuilt to 4.10
-Frame blasted and epoxy coated
-Body blasted, replaced sheet metal and Vortex lined inside and underneath
-Rear disk break upgrade kit
-New interior
-Painless wiring
-Rebuilt heater core and ducting and added 73' Blazer blower motor (I love the heat output....toasty!)
-Centerforce clutch
-All stainless bolts
-HD steering pump with "no return"
-4" Lift with HD shocks and springs
-31x10.5 's on my favorite rim of all time "Outlaw II"
and I am sure there is soooooo much more I am not remembering!!!

But here starts the picture show.....

Starting with a good foundation....

Chassis is back from blasting and coating, engine, drive-line and tub go on....

Rebuilding and assembling....

Heater core and ducting rebuild and front clip assembly.....

The heart....

Power plant. Used a Weber carb and HEI distributor and got rid of the computer and 90 percent of the vacuum lines. Was able to use a charcoal canister from a YJ to get the fume recovery functional.

Winter doors and soft top.....

Have nice options for full hard or half sliders for winter, and some a quick adjustment to make my brake lights legal with add on side lights.

Looks great! I'm curious, where did you find roll bar padding for your Scrambler?

I used the covering from a CJ-7 kit. I couldn't get the padding on underneath. Will try this summer on a hot day an warm everything up. My guess is that the CJ-8 rollbar has a wider diameter? I may be crazy, but I've put a similar kit on a past CJ-7 I had with no problem.

Looks Awesome:thumbsup::thumbsup:........Great to see the evolution and it coming together:cheers:

you're doing it all wrong man.. these projects are suppossed to get mired in years of frustration and financial woes ;)

seriously.. awesome job and really dig what you did with it.. really like those hard half uppers with the sliders as well, are they from bestop, and do they fit your half cab?

Nice!!

Yes, the -8 rollbar is larger diameter than a -7, that's your issue with the padding.

I love seeing Jeeps come full circle - stock, then lifted on huge tires... restored to a nice mild stance! Great work! Love the color combo.

Thanks.....It's been worth it....except changing my mind on the interior color scheme! But I am stoked on how it turned out.

The uppers on here are Bull-Dawgs and they fit my soft top. That way I have the option of full hard doors in the winter and half-doors for summer.
