Jeep Bed Mat Restoration

I followed Dennis' lead on this project but thought I would share in a separate thread for future reference. Not much to it.

I used some engine degreaser in a few spots to clean some grime off the mat, then washed with Dawn dish detergent and let dry. Next, I used a small foam roller to apply the M.E. Millers tire paint. This left little foamy bubbles so I used a clean rag to wipe the excess off. I only put one coat and it dried quick. This stuff feels like a thin coat of rubber and it's thin enough to soak in and not just sit on top.

I read several good reviews from tractor restorers who use this stuff. Anyhow, here are a few pictures.

That looks awesome. Let us know how that paint holds up.

Turned out great, thanks for posting the details!

Did this bed mat come w/ your Scrambler, or were you lucky enough to find one for advertised for sale?

That looks awesome! I still plan on finding one of those tucked in the corner of a barn somewhere :fingerscrossed:

Thanks guys!

I'll let you know if I have any issues with this product. I figure if it works on tires it shouldn't have any problems on a stationary object like this mat.

No I bought this one from a listing.

I found one about three years ago on CL for $250 that had been in storage for years. I passed after talking to him because shipping was going to be $40 or $50. I had no idea how hard it was to find one of these. Another member wisely snatched it up!!!! Since then I had been actively looking, when this one popped up. Just a little more coin this time around.:banghead: Good luck on your quest to find one in the wild! They are out there....

I have one that I picked up on craigslist a few lobbyyears ago that's in really good shape. I'm trying to decide whether I should treat mine this way or not. I also have the rubber tailgate mat but don't know if I will be using it also or not. I wonder if the tire paint hurts or helps the value.

IMHO, I don't think you would have ever known if I hadn't posted the before pictures. The sheen and the feel are the same. I don't think it will hurt value.

Now you need to GET YOUR JEEP BACK TOGETHER so you can use your mats....

BTW. Three years later and the mat looks just the same. Millers tire paint has held up great.

Do you think that paint would work well on fender flares, or is it designed to bond to softer rubber?

You know, a full-size template would be awesome...
