MDJuan CJ8 delivered

I guess I'm in the minority, but it drives me crazy that there is no dedicated "New Posts" button that is directly accessible at the top and bottom.

the lightning bolt at the top right, always there. Even as I’m posting this reply at the bottom of the thread. been there since we moved to this.

No new updates here. I've kept in touch with some of you outside of the forum. I'm now trying to get more active on the forum since I now have a personal laptop. It's crazy how technology has advanced that aside from work, I have no need for a computer. Anyhow. I have no new progress to report. I completed a few projects on the house which took precedence over the Jeep. I'm now getting back to the Jeep and am about to place the order for the body panels (fenders, grill, windshield frame, tailgate). Once I purchase those (within minutes), I'll be preparing for the paintjob.

I know this is a very broad question. But for those of you with experience, what range of price should I look to to have this thing painted. So far I've gotten quotes from $6,000-$10,000. 10k being at the top of the range and that's if I went with a silver or a bright red.

My factory paint is white but I may go for the Sebring Red

Any input is appreciated as long as you're polite and respectful. I know it's a tough question to answer as there are many variables. I don't want a Maaco Paint Job and I don't care to have a show car paint job. Something inbetween or close to factory specs.

Thanks.

I think you'd be surprised how easy it is to paint it well yourself. I've painted 7 cars now and the most recent was at least as good as many show cars I've seen for about $1500 in supplies.

As someone that's used the MD Juan tub...before you try to paint it, make sure that you test fit everything. You line up your panels. YOu validate the holes for things like your tailgate alignment, windshield alignment, door alignment. That all the holes in your cowl are there and in their proper positions. I think going with the MD Juan tub might be the worst decision I made with my scrambler. There are so many things are are off just a bit that it made the whole project completely unenjoyable...everything was a struggle. Even the body mount locations were not all in the correct spots. An absolute nightmare I would not wish on anyone. I'd say it took 3-4x as much time and effort to get this jeep done than expected due to all the inconsistencies and oddities of the tub. Regarding paint, if your MD Juan tub was anything like mine, it's going to need a lot of bondo, particularly around all the corners, cowls, and along the bottom. I had to do a lot of work to get rid of the waviness too. I used all original jeep body other than the tub. You can look up my thread on this somewhere.

I was going to say this exact thing, test, test, test, test, before you move anywhere with paint.

I have never painted one or gotten quotes, so I'm no help on that end, but I'll be another voice for essentially reassembling your Jeep, including all top options, before you paint.

x2. (or 3) Fit check the doors and the half (or full top) with the bulkhead and windscreen, the door fit is affected by how the tub sits on the frame, so temporarily bolt the tub on. Expect to use a fair mount of Bondo on the rear wheel arches at least.
Also chech that all the fiddly bit are present, things like the brackets for the swing tailgate latches inside the tub.

X4 Totally agree, check everything fits before paint :D
I heartily recommend you spend the time to build the whole Jeep back together on a dry run as not only will it make it easier to put back together after paint but you will limit the chances of missing something that MD Juan has not got right and make you cut in to that lovely new paint.

Everyone seems to have different issues on them, one problem i had was the door latches needed cutting in on mine as there was no cutout for the locks but i had no issues with bolting it down to the frame like others seem to have, all i had was an untapped plate in one of the mounts.

Dont let us frighten you too much!, a good body shop (or yourself if you have the skills and patience) will get rid of the rest of the rest of the imperfections and only a Scrambler purist will know the difference then.;)

I think most painters would tell you; it depends on how many hours of prep they need to do, or is it shoot and go. I had a family friend paint mine and he changed me only for supplies and it was almost 3k. 1 stage vs. 2 stage would matter....

I know you won’t but I strongly recommend you sell that MD tub and buy a donor scrambler from out west.

You can make the md juan tub work fine but just don’t assume it will be right and prepare for a lot of boxy work. As stated above only the purists will know when its done as long as you do it right.

I am in the process of building a 1983 CJ8. I bought an MDJuan tub from C&C Supply in Indiana for $2500.
The tub came perfectly in its crate and I’ve attached pictures for your reference. This was a big deal for me when I was trying to decide on a tub and I had a lot of questions that ended up still being unanswered. I went with the MDJuan because I wanted it as original as possible. Willy’s Overland uses the MDJuans that they claim to “fix”. Each time I’ve reached out to them, they try to push the unfixed tub on me for a lot more than I paid for mine. If you have any questions please feel free to reach out and I’ll assist or send pictures of whatever you’d like to see on the tub. My restoration can also be found on Instagram at @Scramblerrestoration
I bought the same tub back in January 2020 your going to find a few holes missing,if you have a t5 tranny your going to have to in large the hole for the shifter I also found they used the paint to hide imperfects the measurements are pretty dead on ,the body mounts line up perfectly your blower on your heater is not going to fit you will have to enlarge it.but mine took about 5 months to make it perfect and it was worth it there great tubs
