Meet Red, my 81 Restomod Build

Happy Birthday, Red! 42 years old today!

Yes, I’m still around. I’m not going to even try to explain why I have made 0 progress in the last 7 months. But the last of the boxes that were cluttering my garage went away today, so I’m out of excuses.

Great to hear from you Randy I’ve been keeping an eye out for your post. I figured you have been settling in to your new place.
It has been a process, and that is an understatement. Going from a huge shop to a 20’x21’ garage has been more than a challenge. I finally had to put about 20 tubs of stuff out in the barn. Then there was the stack of 20’ logs… now all cut and stacked, drying and waiting to be split. Pastures got fenced, hay got stacked, plants got planted, and so much more. Unexpected and costly surgeries on both of our dogs (all is well). Truck needed a new front axle, and then got sold. Replaced with a cherry 1999 Yukon. And I’m sure I left a lot out. And I’m nowhere near done.

Hopefully I’ll be back to posting Scrambler updates soon.

I understand completely. My home and shop are on 20 acres. Plus I farm citrus. It is constant work. If you let up, just a little, it will get away from you.
Looking forward to updates on Red. 👍

So, I just read this entire thread.

You have me thinking I need to do vintage air.

I may have missed it, but what radiator and fan did you use?

Sorry about the slow reply. Your project sounds great!

I used a BeCool LS swap radiator. Honestly, I only gained a small percentage of additional core area, but the modifications to the grille and then the snowball effect of headlamp clearance etc. along with the need for a slight body lift to clear the frame rails left me thinking it was not the wisest decision. The fan is a Lincoln MKVII unit trimmed to fit. It’s a powerful 2 speed fan- but very deep and there was a water pump swap and belt routing reconfiguration needed to get adequate clearance.

It’s still a ways off from being driveable so I don’t know if all the effort was worth it.

My last 5.3 swap used a Northern aluminum radiator and the stock LS truck fan with a shroud. It never gave me any issues.

Short update. Just when I thought it was safe to post that “I’d be back at it”, life threw us another curve ball. Carol was out with the horses a week ago and got kicked in the leg right above her knee. After a trip to urgent care and X-rays, the Doc said it would just take time to heal. Long story short- not so. Wednesday a specialist ordered a MRI and believes surgery is necessary. We’re going for an ultrasound this afternoon to make sure there’s no blood clot in there. Then MRI tomorrow. Surgery not scheduled yet.

She has had 2 surgeries on her “bad knee”, left leg. Well, this injury was to her “good knee”, right leg. She can barely walk around and won’t be able to drive for months, so I’ll be a busy boy between horse and house care, and driving Miss Daisy!😆 ( I thought that was hilarious, somehow she didn’t.)

So, any forward progress on Red will probably be slow going. But I’m going to chip away at it.

I know a lot of you know I have another hobby, things that go bang. Not working on Red these past months has led me to redirect my creative desires. I’ve been buying older Ruger Single Sixes. Got a beauty the other day- the plum coloring on the frame is actually a defect, but a rare and desirable one. This was built in 1965 and is barely used.

I also did a little custom work on my .45 Vaquero. Fitted a Super Blackhawk Hunter grip frame and it’s currently out getting custom grip panels fitted.

So, even though I’ve been slacking on Red, I haven’t been a total slacker.

Thanks. I ended up reading another post where you mentioned all that.

I've done the same head light mods you did, to get a swap radiator into my race CJ2, so I understand what's involved. Then again, the CJ2 has a GMPP LT4 in it, with a bit more HP.

That looks pretty trick! Is that tiny pulley an overdrive water pump pulley?

Well, it’s time for another update. Last time I told y’all about Carol’s knee injury. Well, there were 2 blood clots that are being treated with blood thinners. The good news is that there was no surgery needed- it’s been a long and painful road, but she is getting around fairly well. The doctor projects about a 70 week total recovery time- lots of physical therapy and unfortunately lots of pain. But we are pleased that no surgery is required.

I also wrote that we sold our 11 Silverado after a major repair was needed. Well, our 2014 Grand Cherokee Overland pulled the same stunt and got the same treatment. It developed an electrical issue that cost $1300 to replace an inexpensive transfer case control module. So to ward off future trips to the Jeep dealer we sold it too. It feels good to not have any payments! Just this week we found a suitable replacement- a 2002 Sierra Denali Quadrasteer. Paid cash- still no payments! Now before you say that it’s just more electronics- well, at least I don’t have to go to the dealer to get it fixed. And the system is pretty bulletproof. I worked for GM when these were new, but never really looked into them. It sports a 6.0, AWD, and a D60 rear end with 4.10 gears and limited slip. Rated to tow 10,300 lbs. not bad for a half ton truck. Plus it drives like a car. My wife loves it- it’s her truck as I’ve pretty much claimed the Yukon. RenderedImage.jpeg

Anyways…yesterday while in Medford Carol found a Wagoneer for sale. It was running, clean title, and $1200. And no, I didn’t buy it. I really need to get the Scrambler finished first and I don’t need any distractions. $1200 was a deal, but it needed every bit of interior, weatherstrip, and also paint. Plus it has the straight six…IMG_8169.jpegIMG_8168.jpegWhile I was looking at the Waggy, I saw another couple of Jeeps in the guy’s shop. Scramblers! There was a red one, lifted with a 360. He was considering selling it, asking $10k. It has some rust and will need some work.IMG_8170.jpegIMG_8171.jpegHe also had his “keeper”- a sweet completely done Scrambler with a SBC 350. Couldn’t get a really good look at it but it appears to be well done. I directed him to the Forum so maybe we can find out more about it he said his neighbor a block over had a daily driver Scrambler too! IMG_8172.jpeg
So, after making the wise decision not to buy the Waggy, I was a bit “jeep depressed”. Well, marketplace must have felt my pain, and last night rewarded me with a set of 15x7 white spokes, dated 1983. IMG_8185.jpeg

After a Jeep filled day, I spent a lot of time last night thinking about my Scrambler. I sure wish I could snap my fingers and have it done- all these years in progress have sort of dampened my spirits towards the build. But as we’ve discussed here before, that’s the danger of a long term project. And why at this stage of life I don’t need another project (Waggy). Did I mention they there was a 1967 VW Squateback that came and then was resold a month later?

Well, my body tries to fight me on a daily basis. It seems to take way longer to recover from twists and strains. Shoulders and a neck that work for a day and hurt for a week. Etc. Bottom line- I need to get Red finished and driving. There’s no way that will happen before the rain hits here…there’s also no way it will ever happen if I don’t start working on it again. While progress will probably be slow, at least I’ll start getting there. It’s been way too long without a running Jeep. Updates to follow.

123k. Been well cared for.
Nice. The quadrasteers are hard to find cleaner with low miles in my parts(not possibly really). I had a 2002 Silverado LS with 101,000 when it got totalled in late 2019. Prices are much higher for them now. If I could find a clean low mileage for not stupid money I would get rid of my ram and pick it up. Found one and they want 18,000 for a 20 year old half ton truck, nope. I miss a truck that turn like a Honda Accord, it spoiled me.

I paid $8500 for this with an extra set of the original wheels. There is a bit of wear on the drivers seat cushion- but no cracks. The clear coat is starting to fade at the tops of the doors. But that’s it. I am extremely happy with this “find”. As for the turning radius- it’s amazing!

Around me that would be for sale for probably $12,000. I would have bought it in a heart beat if I saw it near me. Great for backing trailers also. Just remember after 3 seconds in neutral, quadrasteer defaults to "off".
