When I started this thread almost 2 years ago I had owned my 8 for six months and prior to that the only Jeep I'd ever been around was the '95 wrangler we abuse the tar out of and use like a four-wheeler around the farm. My 8 has definitely taught me a lot.

I did drive up to the shop tonight and snapped some pics of my other transmission. I need to do a little research but I'm sure it's a T5:

I'd stay away from the T5. Sell it and use the money to fix the T176.

I've got a T5 in one of mine. I NEVER use 5th gear. Speed limit around here is 60 just about everywhere and my T176 does great in 4th gear at that speed.

T176 is a much better transmission. Tear into it and see exactly what you need.

Spankrjs, I know the aftermarket shift forks are crap, but the top covers are no good either?

Now you just need to change the gear ratio in your differentials. Probably need 4:88

So it's been three months since I've accomplished anything Jeep related. I did open up the TC this evening. Oil was extremely trashy but after cleaning everything looks good. IMG_5307.jpg
I also realized (I think) why it wasn't shifting back out of 4wd. IMG_5308.jpg
Shouldn't be too bad of a fix if this part is available. I quit because I need to find my Moses Ludell manual. Not much progress but it's something.
 
I'm having problems finding the part I'm needing for my tc in the above post. It is part number 14 in this diagram. Any ideas what it's called and where I can find it?

I think he broke that part that the rod pin rides in. JeepScrambler on here had a wanted post for it a while back and I sent one to him from a good tcase to help him out cause he has my jeepster in storage among other amazing hospitality efforts in the past :cheers:

Now that I see how the part should look it explains why I could never shift back out of 4wd. I would have to remove short rail caps and tap one forward with a rubber mallet. The groove at the bottom of this part keeps the "shifter toggle" from swiveling so pressure can be applied to both rails.
Just about got the tc stripped down completely tonight. Everything appears to be in great shape. Some new bearings and this part in question should have it good as new. Assuming I can put it back together.
