So it's clear now that no matter how much you pay for a CJ, in this case Scrambler, there is going to b e something wrong,

This one I just bought is no different! This one I just bought has an issue the back axle. When I picked it up from the shipper driving home it seemed like the rear brakes were dragging. After a few short rides I dug deeper to find out what was up. ONE look under it and I saw something very surprising. The diff is pointed up drastically!

Once I had it apart it was obvious... I've done this for a very long time and saw it pretty clearly, the spring perches on there are some kind of weird crap I've never seen before! They Bolt on with a collar, the upper part is welded to the inside of the perches, not to the axles with a bolt on front and back, so it spun on those.

Then some VERY unsmart person came behind That and instead of moving the axle back where it needed to be, and actually welding then... they simply welded them in place!!!!! Then welded the perches in with the pinion way up and hence it ripped the u-joint apart And I was on the side of the road with a dangling Driveshaft!

The original owner said he had put only 2000 miles on it as it is!!! There is 100% no way this thing traveled 2000 miles like this. Simply isn't possible, especially when I felt something driving right after drop off......

None-The-Less... I can fix it!!! I have to cut off the perches, lower the pinion and weld New perches on and reassemble.

The spring perches... Has any one heard of, or seen these? The picture shows just the bottom and the top part is still a welded part of the spring perches still under the Springs!

These had bolts thru them to clamp the perches to the axle and as mentioned, this just the lower part.

I completely missed that setup on there. I didn't look enough at the rear end. Damn.

Don't beat yourself up, we all notice different things. I've checked out a few Jeeps for forum members, and I tend to focus mainly on rust and crappy body work... because those are the things that would be toughest for me to fix. I'd likely miss other flaws, because they might not seem as important to me.
As friends, we're good for first looks, and general impressions, no guarantees... and I'm sure 1BADCJ8 didn't expect anything more. :cheers:
 
Don't feel bad man, I am in the same boat with my 81. I keep finding the crap that the previous "restorer" did that make 0 sense. Bypassed heater core, wrong transmission and transfer case, gauges and switches on the dash that don't work at all, removed heat ducting, removed the washer bottle and pump. I could go on, but you know what, with all the issues, problems, and wrong things on this 8, I still feel like the coolest guy on the road when I take her out. For every fix I cross off the list, there are 2 more that I have to add. But I love it, I can fix it with tools, blood, sweat, and tears instead of a damn computer. Even my 03 VW Golf isn't as easy to work on. With all the issues and problems, I love this Jeep and am going to give her the TLC she deserves! At least you don't have to put a whole new wiring harness in it! I am, hopefully, going to be taken care of that in the next month or so!

That s exactly correct. No bust on you at all Eric I appreciate you as much as I have in the 20 plus years I've talked to you on here and your opinion is still excellent enough for me...

THE Next item up is the gears in the 9in rear have to be replaced, there is a good 3/4 inch slop gap in them and thats not good. Do I still love it? Absolutely!!!
 
Hey the thought that you are ever going to see a perfect CJ after 40 years is pretty slim. I’ve had mine its whole life and it’s in good condition but not a show piece.
 
NOT the point at ALL... Comments like that are so easy from the sidelines! When you pay some big money for something you should be able to reasonably expect things to be pretty good, or at least get a good understanding of what is what. So, am I disappointed in what was and what was not told? Dang strait! One spending a little over 20K should be able to drive a tad more than 30 miles before crap goes south. Is it the end of the world? Naw it isnt! Will it get fixed and then be great? Yeah prolly so! As soon as I get past my last little personal set back.

HAs my trust factor taken a bit of a hit? Yep for sure, but still not the end of anything by any stretch. And perhaps some one telling about something should be taken as that, and not necessarily complaining. If it was complete garbage, then I'd be complaining, but its not and I'm not either! Facts are facts, not so much complaining 8-)
