We're $3.79 here in Northern California today. Lowest in a while. Diesel is $4.67.
Not too long ago (20 or 25 years) people were buying diesel automobiles because it was cheaper than gas. Cheaper to refine then, so why is it more expensive to buy now?

The government taxes diesel much higher in both refining and at the pump.
Because diesel has higher BTUs than petrol it is more efficient. Therefore it yields less taxes per mile than petrol (because you use less) so in order to get an equivalent amount of taxes per mile they tax it more highly.
Which is why I'm always thankful that we don't get all the government we pay for.

For sure. My truck is a 1999 F-350 7.3 PowerStroke Diesel. I ordered it from Ford and it cost me $27K. It currently has a little over 250K miles. At the time of purchase, Diesel fuel was a decent amount less per gallon compared to gas. That definitely factored into my purchase.

Previous to that I had a 1997 Dodge Ram 2500 with a 5.9 "Magnum" V8. When towing my Scrambler with a Lance Camper loaded on, I got almost double the fuel mileage with the PowerStroke and it climbed hills much easier.

Now it is common to have to use Biodiesel when filling up. Usually between 5% and 20% Biodiesel content. No issues running it but I think I get a slightly less mpg level.

You weren't getting anywhere fast with that setup. My brother bought a Powerstroke Ford right before diesel prices surpassed regular unleaded.(atvleast I seem to think so). Got better mileage and much more power but at a higher cost that gas.

I've got the 3.0 Duramax in both my Silverado and my Wife's Tahoe. Both are 4wd. My wife's tahoe averaged 32 mpg to Asheville and back. My truck has averaged 26 mpg over the last 67000 miles. Overall not too badfor a loaded, long bed 4wd with 3" lift. Towing our 26' camper to Cape Cod and Kansas I averaged 13.8 mpg.
Modern diesels are virtually 0 carbon with bio diesel and ultra clean with Dino diesel. Environmentally, they are superior to petrol engines and they can run alternative diesel with no ill effects and without modification.
Australia now has a hydrogen conversion for any direct injection diesel which renders them zero emission (actual zero emission, not 'zero emission' like a tesla using coal- fired electricity to charge Chinese lithium ion batteries) because hydrogen can be had using solar power to separate hydrogen from the air.
I know; I'm tilting at windmills here. But I've always had diesels and I love them. I will drive diesels until they pry them from my warm, efficient, dead fingers.
@gpassida God Lord, that looks awesome..... and that was before you had the nicest 8 on the planet.
