New World Cabs?

I finished up the Soft Barn Door project today. I left the old tan with clear rear window in, instead of putting my nice black with tinted window in for now, I'll run it a few weeks to test it for weathertightness before I cut up my nice rear window. When I do get the black/tinted window in it will look a lot nicer, the framing will pretty much disappear against the dark tint.

On overall "open" view:

The opening with the rear upper door removed (left) and installed and closed (right):

The parts before installation. The "surround" just sets in holes in the tub rail, snaps to the top bow of the soft top with quick-disconnects, and zips in place. The upper door is held in place with four thumbscrews:

And finally an overall exterior shot...

I also finished up the budget roof rack, with lights, and got it installed on the Safari Cab, but only had a chance to take one photo at the end of the day. More photos tomorrow.

fantastic

Nice work as expected Mr S!
So how hard would it be to do some for CJ variants and sell a tiny "kit" to folks...

CJ variants of what? Sorry, I've posted a lot of things lately. The Soft Barn Door? The full-length Safari Cab for the CJ-8? Half-cabs for CJ's? The Pickup cap for CJ-8's?

Here's a morning dew shot of the "Budget Roof Rack Basket" on the unfinished LJ Safari Cab.

Back to the original title of the thread... "New World Cabs" - here's the new "Safari Cab" and it's cousin the "World Cab"...

The project is almost complete, in the final stages of painting now. Should have it completed and installed within a week.

Bravo JS! Great work as we have always come to expect from you!

I'm not sure which I prefer, the matte finish on the TJ of the gloss/matching paint on the CJ. The CJ looks more like it just blends in...ala LR D90 or Sammy hardtop? More European perhaps...? And since you commited sacralige by putting TJ bumpers and their plastic fists on the CJ...it really does look more European...heehee.
I like both. Now just share some secret squirell stuff about these coming into reality! PLEASE!:popcorn:

I like the "just blends in" look, and as you can see from the photos of the painted panels I posted this morning, the matte finish on my Safari Cab was just the primer - the final finish will be gloss black to match the LJ's body (just like my Scrambler/World Cab was).

I have delivered my original mold masters to "the company", and they are in the process of making their own molds as a first step towards production. Here's some "spy photos" of their mold work, I'm very impressed with the quality of the work they're doing:

* I suppose I would like to see them on a different colored body...add some contrast ans show off your mad skills?*

*They should simply ad this as their advertisement line and the tops will sell themselves! Anyone doing good enough work for YOU to praise them...Wow!*

My son Alex has "mad skills" with Flash animation, and he built me this "Color Picker" app for the Safari Cabs - just click on the screen image below and you can go wild with color combinations:

I've been thinking a bit about the configuration of the rear door/hatch for CJ-7's and Scramblers - unlike the TJ and YJ with their swinging tailgates, I had thought the CJ models would use the same barn door upper, only hinged to swing up as a hatch instead of swinging sideways.

There are three options for CJ's that I can think of:

1. Swing the upper door upwards like the hatch on factory hardtops. Being that the hatch has to open before the tailgate on a CJ, there would be a turn handle to secure the hatch just like the factory CJ hardtops (the orange Jeep below)

2. Swing the upper door sideways. A paddle handle and lock could be used, or possibly a CJ-style turn handle placed over the the side of the door. (the green Jeep)

3. A full one-piece fiberglass barn door, replacing the factory tailgate. This could be built to use factory YJ or TJ tailgate latches, hinges and lock. I've drawn it with an embossed Jeep logo molded into the door, but I've done this in a dotted line because this is how I would make it if I were making one for myself, but due to trademark rights, I think it would have to be omitted if this door were to go into production. (the gray door drawing)

The drawings below omit the CJ's side-swinging tire carrier for clarity. Also, a fiberglass full barn door would not be strong enough to carry a spare, so the spare carrier would still be required, the spare could not be hung on the door.

The survey results for CJ's is evenly divided on the question of upward-swinging vs. full barn doors. The side swinging upper is a new concept not asked about in the survey - anyone have opinions on that? (or on options 1 or 2?)

Here's the link to the survey again for those who haven't taken it yet: Safari Cab market survey.

Barn & Spare Tire Carrier

How well would the barn door style work with the original spare tire carrier?? I voted for the top hinged with this concern in mind.

i like the upward swinging door. I like having a tailgate/seat/table. not a fan of the side swing half door..

The full barn door would work fine with the factory spare carrier. You'd just have to swing it open before you opened the barn door. Either version of the separate upper door (upward-swinging or side-swinging) would also require you open the spare carrier first, so the swinging upper could clear the spare, but all are compatible with the factory spare carrier.

I can now declare that all of the construction work on Safari Cab #1 is done! Here's a few photos, but unfortunately they don't really do the finish justice.

All that's left now is to reassemble everything and stick it on the LJ.

Lj

Jeff, Awesome work as always.

U got me looking for a low mile 06 Rubicon Unlimited.

I like option 1 rear door just like a CJ.

Gotta have tailgate.... and IF you can't find shade to park, the rear door open overhead (if glass tinted) provides some shade.

Seems like whenever I go bird hunting, I'm working out of back of CJ. Tailgate is a must.

I haven't really posted much about my next project, but there's one aspect of it you might be interested in - my plans call for adapting a CJ tailgate to an LJ tub, and doing it so it looks "factory" - with proper latches for a later model Jeep and the ability to close the tailgate before the liftgate as the later model hardtops require.
