Novak in tank fuel pump

On two of my scramblers, I am running the Mopar fuel injection kit from Hesco. I have had some problems with both jeeps vapor locking at higher altitude. After after a lot of trial and error, I figured out that where I had my fuel pump mounted, “ in front of the fuel tank above the rear axle/exaust” was a heat trap. The fuel pump was getting really hot causing the fuel to turn to vapor. It was then pumping vapor up to the motor causing it to die. I relocated the fuel pump to the rear of the tank, and the problem was solved. A little over a year ago, I decided to replace the loud external fuel pumps in both Jeeps, with the Novac “in tank” fuel pumps. I had. been very happy with them up until a couple of months ago. While driving my jeep, it suddenly died. It would not restart, so I checked the fuel rail valve, and nothing came out. No fuel pressure. Once I got it back to the shop, I dropped the tank and found a huge split in the fuel line. Turns out Novak no longer uses this blue hose because they’ve had several problems like this one. Thought I’d make the forum aware in case anybody else is running these pumps. Novak is sending me some replacement hose. to remedy the problem.

I never use the rubber coupler hose that comes with some fuel pump kits. Most of them these days are junk and might last a couple of years at best. That is why I use the submersible Gates hose above or convert to the corrugated hose. Unfortunately, not all of the corrugated hose is made the same too..... What happened to you is a very common failure.

Had the sameish issue with mine. hose was rated for ethanol but only inside the fuel line, outside was regular rubber. outside of mine swelled to the point that the hose clamp lost clamping pressure and the hose blew off the pump... and that's where the second issue came about. the barb on the end of the fuel pump did not have a flare on it, it was smooth. had there have been a flare, the hose likely wouldn't have blown off.
got a length of ethanol submersible fuel line and replaced the pump to one with a flare. haven't had a problem since. (just jinxed myself...)

I think I will break out my new flaring tool and put a flare in mine before reinstalling. Good information, thanks!

He was taking about the outlet on the pump not having a flare on it which would be plastic. I wouldn't recommend flaring the plastic outlet.

My mind was envisioning the steel pick up tube. I haven’t taken it apart yet. Why wouldn’t they put a flare/spur on that plastic nipple coming off the pump? That makes no sense.

Sorry to hijack, but where did you source the brass float?

Also curious about the fuel lines - has anyone converted to high pressure fittings, or have the band clamps worked fine? I need to add a 3/8” fuel line for my Explorer 5.0 conversion, and the Novak pump is almost ready for install.

Any ford brass float from 60’s to 90’s. My 1994 F150 had the same float. Heck, I think my 2002 F250 Had the same float.

Thanks guys, yes that is originally a Ford Galaxie part number.

Any feedback on the hoses - worm clamps have held up?

These guys are absolutely correct. Ford brass float. I think I bought mine at either CJ pony or Toms Bronco parts. As far as the worm drive clamps….. I hadn’t ran them for very long before having problems with the hoses “ maybe 8 to 12 months”. They were still tight when I change the hoses though.

I used this style made for fuel injection and have had no issues. Holley fuel injection pump for my Vortec, so 50+ PSI i think it is.
