Project "Blue", My 1987 J20 Build

That looks great! You're shaming me in to doing more cleanup when my engine comes out (very shortly).

No shaming intended! That paint was tough to spray, especially with the rattle-can style sprayer. If I sprayed heavy enough to be smooth it looked like leopard spots. Had to keep it dry and layer on light coats. Not ideal technique but my compressor isn’t hooked up yet.

Wicked. Just spent a couple hours reading thru this thread again, makes me want to pull my J20 in and get it alive again. Looking really good.

A few more pics of the installed engine. I'm amazed at how smoothly it went in, the Flop Shop mounts were worth every penny. There's more room with the LS engine than with the stock 360. I think I could fit a bowling ball between the engine and the firewall recess! Plus plenty of access for everything else.

Not much progress with everything else going on... but I was curious and swapped on the H2 wheels and 35" tires. They fit easily, and the wheels are hub-centric to boot. Not sure I like the bigger tire and the wheel, I will probably go back to the Outlaw II's and some 32-33" tires.

I like 35s on a full sized pickup, but I'm not sold on the wheels.

The overall look is pretty tough, though!

Looks like you eat of the floor in that shop. J20 looks nice also.

Making progress slowly but surely, as time and finances allow. Pulled the bed to clean and repaint the frame, and started adding the externals back on the engine. Hopefully I’ll be making more frequent updates from now on. F357D2C9-4080-4ED6-89E5-28A6F8BB30B7.jpeg51D4C5EC-E6BB-4B9F-81EE-2FB4A3DDD32A.jpeg76B41A5F-003D-4DEE-8BFF-2B91CAC97928.jpeg

A bit more progress. The transfer case mount for the 241c would have been right on the bend on the stock crossmember. So, time to modify. It’s been over a year since I welded anything, but it came out ok. I just built a simple box on the back of the crossmember. Painted it up and installed the case. Clearances all still look good!62F81DDC-0FAD-48AD-84BC-36ABEECBE622.jpeg9AEB9919-9463-4880-BECD-5E49025F25CF.jpegD4863360-6A0F-42E6-92DE-1CF5F2339D7A.jpeg

Baby steps. I waited 2 or more years to put a front driveshaft in the Scrambler- so I figured I’d do it a bit different this time. Changed out the front yoke on the transfer case to a CV style. Took a few measurements and had the stock front shaft lengthened 4” and rebalanced. Bolted in perfectly! Now to figure out the exhaust routing. Going to try and take a 2 1/2” pipe under just ahead of the trans pan and then into a 3” Y with the passenger side. Probably be tight but I think there’s room.

God I love seeing updates to this thread again. Great to have you back at it brother

At this rate this is a 10 year build. Just kidding. I finally finished painting the frame. Cleaned it up, sprayed with rust converter and then top coated with epoxy. Now to start putting parts back in!
