It can't be electric, as the amps needed for that space kind of makes it not feasiable BTU wise.
I need a quick/short burst really for a few hours per night... for 3-4 months out of the year.

So, propane is ideal from what I am gathering for my situation... the next question is will I ever need A/C as well? If so, then a force hot air/AC system/furnace/coil setup is probably the best (and most expensive)... if no A/C, then a unit heater with propane.

I want quiet as well... but sometimes the "wants" don't outweigh the "needs"... I need heat desperately as it is consistently 30 degrees out there and my hands hurt a lot.

I just happen to "want" a lot of other things :), but the piggy bank is empty at the moment... thus the new CJ7 to the mix to teardown and sell some parts.

Next year I will have something in place... this year I just couldn't do it.

We have natural gas here so i have that setup for the house, gasheat/ac unit and love it, plus gas stove and water heater. I'm hearing the environmentalist want to eliminate that in new home construction. Gas is cheap around here.
 
Being directly west by 45 minutes, I am not sure how you get any time outside wrenching in the winter without heat. My shed is unheated as well. I joined my local makerspace so I could have a warm space. You are tougher than me.

I insulated the garage really well and wanted to see how bad it really was... summer wasn't that bad... got maybe to 77 one day inside as long as I kept the garage down... winter on the other hand is another story... it wasn't really bad until mid-December. Now it is next to impossible when it is zero degrees overnight. This week warms up a bit and last night it was 40 in there due to the warming temps, but that still is tough on the hands.

Have you considered a forced air propane heater? I've used those and knipco style diesel/kerosene. They are pretty fast and cheap. The knipcos are quite a bit louder and can have a bit of a smell. The propane sound like a fan and also work pretty well. Not as fast as a knipco, but also better than freezing.
 
Like the ceiling mount heaters, direct vent. Mr Heater is a pretty decent unit. Reasonable pricing and easy to install and get running. Where you have attic overhead. A unit can be hung up there with flex duct to ceiling registers. You have high ceilings so have to size unit accordingly. Plenty of heat loss programs out there to determine efficient unit size to BTU load. Propane or nat gas is fuel of choice.
 
yeah, I talked to a few people and if I want quiet vs. loud and A/C vs. not is really the decision points.
Space as well... an actual furnace with a coil for A/C will take up space in the shop.
A ceiling mount will not, but will be louder and cheaper.
Either way it needs fuel, electric won't cut it.

Realize different climate, I have had great experience with mini-splits… keeps warm even in teens outside and cool over 100 outside… might be able use an supplement with gas BTU in winter and use AC in summer, which helps with humidity…

I was thinking the same thing. Heat pumps don't use much wattage for heating, but there has to be enough heat in the outside air for them to be effective. Curious what the pros in NH think.
As far as cooling... my house A/C is set at 79 @ 50% humidity, 77 wouldn't be too hot, 40's if definitely too cold for me. :D
 
That's what i need - (ceiling mount propane heater) no point having a garage/workshop if its too cold to be in it - cabin fever's setting in.

Can’t see the point in banning natural gas in homes around here. Most of our power plants are natural gas fired steam turbine generation units. Moving the burning of the gas from a home to a power plant is ignorant green peace tree hugging fallacy.

I am in the process of installing a natural gas line to my house to run a 24kw generator, 400k btu pool heater, 3 furnaces, 2 hot water heaters, and a clothes dryer. About 1.3M btu in all. Gonna be burning gas like it is going out of style. 😎

Especially since I hearing we have a couple few hundred year supply on this continent.
 
It seems to be in vogue not to be energy independent. After all, we were.... now we're not and the media is happy again. Go figure.
 
We have discussed the mini-splits... the only downside to it was more on the side of taking longer to heat up from the starting point.
If I go out there, I want basically instant heat for 2-3 hours and then turn it off and then repeat the next day... weekends would be all day I guess for the most part.

Added benefit to that is A/C as well... and less humidity overall.

Not a lot of time this week with the weather and work, but all in all, rollbar out, some flooring removed.

And a whole lot of removal of bolts and separation of pieces... none of these bolts would turn even with heat... rust is fun!

Last I knew, they don't remake these... so you have to make your own, or repair what you have.
This is why I took so much time getting them out in this shape... so I can now get the bolts out and clean them up and repair where necessary.
I need to reuse them.

I know a guy that had some makeup in Morgantown, PA. Had them on ebay and FB marketplace. not sure if he has any left.
