Project Panel Replacement

Other side work... this was a funny one.
I tried to get a square picture with the panel in relation to the Jeep.
What I was chasing when cutting and placing the panel was the middle rib.
If you really stare at it long enough, you will see that it is somewhat crooked.
It wasn't rolled parallel to the top and bottom ones.
It is slight, but it is there.
I got the panel as good as I could get it in there... I will not mess with this anymore, I have spend WAY too much time fighting it.

This is not a knock in the manufacturer, this is an aftermarket part I am trying to make work with a stock OEM floor.
I could have replaced the whole floor, but I did not as the center section was solid... just my own OCD acting up pretty hard and wanting things "perfect" and I can't have it that way.

cb

Attempting to get the brackets on the new floor pan and kept running up against old vs. new parts... some trimming, adjusting, and then finally hogging out and it is in place.

20220926_175210_resized.jpg

needed an 1/8 in each oval to get the bolts in there... just hung the lip over too much.

20220926_181911_resized.jpg

All bolted in/down/on/over/up/down and it is very solid... got some tacks in place as well... all in all I am happy. It is not perfect, but making it the best I can.

Finally was the underside... I could not get this to lay flat and work without cutting/trimming... the piece itself was made fine, I just think the nuts were spot welded in off a bit... but side to side I couldn't get it to work either... so I cut it in half, got both pieces where they need to be and will weld it back together... not a huge deal, but just more time.

Done for now... just wanted to get it solid enough so I can move to the rollbar mount and wheel tub on this side.
I am going to do the 85/15... get it 85% done and do the 15% later when it is ready for paint.

Nothing fancy.

I don't think those welds are going anywhere... plugged them through and they seem solid.
It is nice to hear when you "knock" on the metal to hear a thump vs. what was there before.

cb

Looking at the welds you got plenty of heat on them and subsequently great fusion. Fun to watch this thing coming together. It hasn't been too many weeks ago that you were bracing the frame. Now to just find a 401 for it..............

Yeah... a little over 2 months ago... after the axle rehabs... I guess 1-2 hours a day makes a difference when you put it over 70 days.

Body is back on... all the body mount bolts went right in except for 1 that was a little snug... but all in all, this thing is solidly mounted and I am glad that part is done.

As for the next step... taking a break from body/metal work to try a bumper idea.

The license plate holder will ultimately and up being bolted to 2 sides (once they are cut) and then bolted to the ends will be the @Kim Dawson metal end caps... I needed the body back on so I can see how much I need to cut the sides down once they are split. It won't be a scrambler bumper exactly, but it won't look too out of place either (hopefully)

The bumper will be 5 pieces... modular/bolt together, and also I will need to make provisions for a couple lights in the license plate holder to illuminate the plate at night time.

cb

Great work…. Looking forward to seeing the bumper come together…

So between the birthdays, anniversaries, going to the fair, and a 100 other things, I started to do very little on the bumper... and then had an accidental follow home :)

20220930_175039_resized.jpg

Capping the ends so I can recess some nuts captive-ly so I can attach the license plate holder.

20220930_175302_resized.jpg

Mock up, it will be straight and level when complete.

I then played with where to do the other capped side

20221001_155526_resized.jpg

Couldn't ask for a more perfect fit inside... like I planned this or something.

20221001_155552_resized.jpg

So, next is busy work with the welder/grinder/drill and hopefully will have something more complete.
Just busy these days.

Also, this

0500 departure

And then this stabbed me in the side while walking by... I guess the old school steel horse mount wanted to say hello... I have a hip level bruise now.

Maybe it's fighting back because it heard so many Jeeps go to your place to get dismantled and it doesn't want that to happen to it.
Yeah, unfortunately the frame is very bad on this... body is more decent...

Got the top off last night and doors, this thing has been sitting a while, so everything is not cooperating.
Looks pretty decent with the top off.

Also, this was a low mile Jeep... just sucks it was in New England its whole life

20221003_183257_resized.jpg

Worst antennae location?

20221003_174337_resized.jpg

I won't put too much else up on this, but this was cool...

20221003_175321_resized.jpg

Under the seat looks to be 2 NOS-ish thermostat housings?
Weird stuff you find.

Been busy, but was able to make sure the measurements are good for the front...

20221013_174037_resized.jpg

20221013_175451_resized.jpg

I need to make a custom shim for the front, or drop down the mount... will better see when the fenders are on... but all in all, the measurements look good.

Tear down continues

20221013_174016_resized.jpg

Busy in the shop these days... and outside as well as the temps continue to drop...

cb

I also made some art... out of some rare stuff, but it was rough....

Silver anniversary hood cutout I got this pas weekend.

Super star hood (half... and the golden eagle I had like 3/4 of)... the were both very rough so I made 1 good hood to hang on the wall.

20221012_184747_resized.jpg

Side Super Star... this hood was hammered in the front badly...

20221012_185136_resized.jpg

I feel there is a making lemonade joke here, but I can't come up with it.

cb

The half cab roll cage came in and I got the windshield frame on... that is about it.
I need to spend some time tidying up as well... as parts come off the 84 CJ7, I am not being dilligent about putting them away due to the lack of time...

20221021_181727_resized.jpg

I got a nice parts haul/deal off FB Marketplace yesterday as well, so that chewed up half the day, but it was all worth it.

cb

Just have to pull the engine and transmission and then this tear down should be complete.
I thought I was done, but I think another is showing up next week... 86 CJ7.
Not sure yet... working the details.

All cleaned up on aisle 1984....

20221104_175306_resized.jpg

Then my 78 CJ7 wheeling rig started acting up... long story short turned out to be the rotor in the HEI as well as the Cap under the ICM... the rubber isolator was no longer isolating... put some fresh wires in as well and threw some injector cleaner in it and drives like a champ.

Cleaning up for the next tear down

20221107_172209_resized.jpg

Picking up a tear down on Friday hopefully ... 86 CJ7. Has a Dana 44 and a T5/Dana 300 combo with a 4.0 L out of a cherokee... winch, etc. we will see how good when I get it.

As for the next couple days... back on the bumper idea/concept.

The welding table is working out very nicely... glad I finally got a fun project to use it on.
The bumper is modular, so I have to weld caps on the ends, drill/add nuts, weld, then tap, etc.
It is slow going, but making projgress...

Clean up and inside... different view of the shop coming down the stairs... the LED lights really mess with the overall lighting of the picture, but you get the idea... it is messy and needs more stuff put away for the winter.

Also working on some dry storage space for the larger items, I don't want them in the elements.

The modular bumper is cool!
Made the other side last night... overall this is too long side to side... need to get it in front(or behind) the Jeep to see side to side where the end caps fall and then cut/weld, etc. and then side to side will be correct. Then just figuring out how to attach it to the cross member so it all looks good and solid... some final welding and then powdercoat is my thought.
