I kinda suspected that and have already checked it out. I believe the knowledge I obtained from this forum in the past is certainly worth the price of admission.

OK! I actually worked on the Scrambler yesterday afternoon! (Paid for it pain-wise later, but I still was smiling.)

I have had the winch installed and hooked up to the second battery for quite a while now. But the second battery wasn't hooked into the charging system. I did it the quick and easy way, just like on OEM diesels. Just ran a couple cables battery to battery. Let them equalize overnight- started right up this morning. If I feel I need to go the isolator route I can do that later- for now I'll go with the mega-amp set-up.

While looking at my front suspension/clearance issues, I realize the RE4.5 springs aren't 4.5" any more. Can you say sag? My front shackle angle used to be perfect, just forward of vertical (7:00 position)- now they are kicked way forward! Love the RE softness and flex, but not the sag. I might have the local spring shop make me a replacement leaf to bring them back, but I think the better idea would be to call Alcan and let them make me a nice set. I was ready to do a shackle reversal, contemplating spring over- I think a couple of new springs would be my best bet, and easiest too. Handling was and is great with the current geometry, no need to reinvent the wheel.

Pitman to tie rod interference- this is sitting at ride height using a flat pitman redrilled for the drag link on the top. I'll also need to use the 1" forward steering box mount. When the springs were new it only rubbed on big whoops- now it rubs all the time. You can see the mark on the tie rod-

Yeah, I know- trim the u-bolts.

Randyzzz..I have a new addition for the gun room...6.5X284, Mauser action with Douglas 25 inch barrel, topped off with a Nightforce 5.5X22X56 MOAR scope. This one will reach out and touch them. Also I shot my first Mule deer two weeks ago in North West Texas using my 7mm stw and Zies Victory Diavori 4x12x56.

Nice! My current lack of income has left me high and dry for new purchases...the Sig2022 .40 came in and I picked that up, (love it, this one has an awesome out of the box trigger)-but a new rifle will have to wait.

Yes I was very lucky to score an AR lower on 12/28 in a sea of non existance. Going to the SHOT Show next week in Vegas to try to find the rest of the parts.

For those that don't know the SHOT Show is just like the SEMA show, but for guns.

I also got my Kel-Tec Sub2000 just before the end of 12. Pretty well equiped now.

Randy: you have a couple of problems with your front end. First your drag link is over the top of the tie rod. Obviously as the springs settle interferance occurs. Moving the steering gear forward will fix that. But the way it is, can't be,,, simply because everytime you hit a bump the two rods will collide. I think you have already figured this out.

The problem with the springs is not going to go away permanently with new springs. You kind of have to plan on it happening. If your suspension will cycle all the way side to side and then compress all the way to the Bump Stops and not interfer with anything, then it won't matter if the spring settles.

It looks like you have Wrangler Springs? They are most likely to settle of all of them out there. You mentioned Alcan which is good. Another readily available brand that is very good is Old Man Emu which seem to hold their arch better than most.

I personally would recommend the spring over conversion. You get 4-5" of lift automatically with stock height springs. It also gives you built in clearance which is less affected by spring collapse. I would also recommend the shackle reversal as it will make your Jeep run down the road better and wander less. Also as your suspension compresses the axles moves towards the rear so you would get some more tie rod clearance in the deal as well. The angle that the spring sits,,, IE; front higher than rear,,, also makes the Jeep take head on bumps better.

I have never understood why Jeep made the shackle forward design over the shackle rearward design. I know they tried both because my 1960 CJ 5 had the shackles in the rear from the factory. The difference in he way the vehicle drives is noticable, and especially so as the vehicle ages. The shackle forward Jeeps get loose quickly and become a chore to drive long distances.

The reason why I went with Fiberglass springs on the DeScrambler is because they don't settle, rust or squeek. I don't know if Teraflex still makes the kit but if they do I would recommend them above all others. I think they had problems with people not installing the kits correctly and then taking them out in the rocks and abusing them causing some failures. I do know that the factory test Jeeps still have theirs installed and have been in use after nearly 10 years, so I'm inclined to believe the idiot factor as being the main problem with the product.

The actual springs themselves came from early Chevy Astro vans which use them in the rear. The same spring was used on Corvette rear suspensions thru the 70's and 80's so the actual concept is well proven. Each one of my springs weighs 13 lbs. considerably less than any Steel Spring.

some ideas for you to ponder.

Randy

Thanks for the tech, guys. Initially shackle reversal looked attractive, but after a little "back time" under the Scrambler I realized that if the axle were to move back under compression my oil pan is too close for comfort. I'm going to be fixing my current springs or installing new springs first. (The current springs are RE4.5's, Wrangler width.) Plus move the box forward, I already have the mount.

If that doesn't work, a spring over or maybe linking the front might be options...

But for now, I need to refill the wallet...

I have spring over, shackle reversal in mine. Jeep drives great! It does nose dive under heavy braking but its not bad. I am running the Camaro oil pan on my 5.3L and have enough clearance (and the suspension has been totally bottomed out). I have a proper driveshaft, (Tom Woods) and it works perfect for it.

Wow...9 months without any updates here. I'm ashamed. Anyways- I am still brainstorming the front suspension, but yesterday I installed some steel WFO 8* shims to get the caster back where it should be with the longer front shackles. She drives nice again. Going to build a front driveshaft that fits and call it good for awhile, until the next round of major mods- links and coilovers?

The delayis because of a major project brewing on the wife's Cherokee. It will be the second Jeep in the family to get a 5.3.

Will be updating that thread, and this one as well, as more progress is made.

Hey Randy, Love the build! Have been thinking about the 1" forward mount myself, but is it an easy fit? Just keep wondering about power steering line routing/intermediate shaft length.

As far as the springs go, have you looked at having them re-arched? I have noticed everyone LOVES the RE 4.5" springs... After they get over the buy in, and before they sag out!
I have a Class 7 Ranger, we run Deaver's in the rear and they are AMAZING! With that said, they do sag over time and a LOT OF ABUSE. We have had to ship them back to Deaver twice now to be re-arched. They come back looking and riding like new!

I've thought about that...and add-a-leafs, Alcans, ect. RE even offered to warranty these for higher load rears if I'd pay return shipping. I'm really holding out for coil-overs, especially because I want to get rid of the "Jeep Lean" probably induced by a 280LB driver...

Awsome job. My jeep is starting to look like a rat rod compared to yours. I really love your dash

Sorry to read your latest 'issues' w/ the Scrambler, but I'm pulling up a chair now for your upcoming projects from the below thread:

https://www.cj-8.com/forum/showthre...-you-my-rain-for-your-snow-any-day-Water-leak

Ugh.... With this water leak, my lousy heater/defroster performance, and my noisy soft top, I may have to wait on the coil over conversion.

Looks like my build thread will be featuring a new windshield frame from a YJ, a better Vintage Air unit, some sort of hardtop that fits, and some sort of replacement front leaf spring fix. On top of the quieter muffler conversion....

Hopefully they're some easy repairs, but if/when you get a chance, can you please post up some more pics of your dash/interior?

All my photos were hosted by Webshots, which went away. I reloaded them on Photobucket, but haven't rebuilt the thread. They are all here... pages 16,17, and 8 seem to have the most. They are rather disorganized but seem to go newest to oldest once you get into the actual build. Towards the end there's some pics of my first dash too.

Fun thread to read. You are off the hook. Here's my Scrambler. Just getting started. Looking at new frame, fronts and rears, 3.5 motor, and complete interior. Great thread to get primed on. Good job.

I'm doin a restore on a 81 cj8. Srry new to jeep n I see u guys useing abbreviations like SOA n SUA. What does that mean.. Randy! I like the stance too. Looks mean!! How did you get the height. I have a 3" body lift with 33s. Have a lot of work ahead of me, but ready n willing..thinking of the outcome at the end. Like someone said on here once... the work is never done. I have a amc 304 in her. My dad says I should slap a 350 in it. Parts are cheaper in a lot more options.. I thought a jeep was a jeep. The more I read on here the more I see of some of the members having all kinds of mods. From diff. Axles to motors to tranny's to all kinds of options. Like I said. New to jeep.. I understand that amc was a industry of useing other auto manufactures parts. Like my 304 has a ford distributor n chevy alternator. Ford 2 barrel carb. So just currious. What's you all's take on your version on being a jeep lover.. I'm for the history. Thanks! Dan
