Hey guys,

My 84 has a rear sway bar, im assuming factory. Ill be installing 4.5 RE springs soon. With the arch of the new springs, will the sway bar fit properly? Im sure someone has run into this scenario before. Couldnt find much info while searching here and google.

Thank you all.

Agree with Barrys. Post pics so we can see what you got.

If it wasn't factory, it was installed shortly after sold. My father bought the jeep in 89 and it was already there.

I have never seen that I would take it off
x2... that is not factory and I can't see how that would help much... let alone get hung up on the rocks off road.
The pics dont' show it, but you would need that attached to the frame at some point and then also not interfere with the springs.
It almost looks like it is attached to the springs.

Most definitely aftermarket. Interesting it uses the spring eye connection as the frame attachment “lever” point and lays on the spring. It almost looks like a combination sway bar / anti wrap bar for muscle cars. But for that purpose, it really needs to be in front of the axle. Wonder if the droop in the middle is to allow the driveshaft to pass through when mounted in front of the axle.

Unless you do a lot of auto crossing with the Jeep, I would ditch it.

Get rid of it...

Side note..... I'm in Raleigh too. Shoot me a message if you ever want to get together or need any help.

That is one of the very weirdest suspension modifications I've ever seen. Absolutely not stock.

In 20 years of being on this forum and however long on Jeep-related social media, I've never once seen that setup.

Absolutely get rid of it.

Post a couple of photos of the mounts at the frame end, please.

I genuinely think it’s entirely useless with those mounting points.

Concept as a roll bar still works, but it functions opposite of how a normal one works.

Normally, the rod going side to side twists and the ends go up and down imparting this twisting on the cross rod. It is this twisting, and more precisely the resistance to that twisting that give you the anti-roll properties.

In this application, the ends are held stationary, and the rod moves up and down. There is still leverage applied to the cross rod causing a twisting action. This twisting is still resisted by the cross rod applying pressure on the leaf at both sides (up and down pressure).

I am more concerned with how the bar bolted to the leaf will diminish its ability to flex in an arc. It will want to pivot on the ends of the bar mounts. If the bar was in front of the axle and this was a “dragster“ that might be a good thing. Not so much with an off highway vehicle.

But the relative movement in this setup for a bar that size is completely mismatched. There’s never going to be much any twist in anything short of a serious off-road flex. Even then, not much at all.
Useless.
