Recommendation for Diesel Swap?

Never finished researching this years ago. Was interested in the 5 cyl for a while. Couldn't get around the oil pan configuration and the high milage.

Well you are going to have a problem here... The OM606 is a 6 cylinder engine and the OM602 is a 5 cylinder engine. So swapping out the pump will present a little bit of a problem regarding timing.
I meant a 606 with a 603 pump from DieselPumpUK with all the goodies. You're just too keen and caught my typo. But unfortunately, I'm broke and haven't had any luck finding a decent donor in my price range.

Not a lot of OM 602's over here. Mine was even more rare because it was a motor that was never imported with a "CE" pump, inner-cooled, and direct injected! This was the same motor used in the Unimog U100L (A VERY impressive piece of hardware).
FYI" I took off the pan and cut a 45 degree slice out of the front and TIG'd a 10mm plate in place. No issue what so ever with the oil pump, and clears the front differential.

I figured as much... Just wanted to poke a little fun!

Yes' there is DieselPumpUK and several others "across'd the pond", however I just have to give GREAT praise for Larry Downum and his certified Bosch "pump house" DIESEL INJECTION SYSTEMS, just down the road from me in Santa Maris, CA! He and his crew are so "on the ball" for consumer diesels (wana'be trucks), semi's, and "AG" tractors. But also because they understand kooks like me that want diesel performance from our special rigs and who have tried to collect the best European small engines! Through my connections in Europe I have "hooked" Larry up with most of the top notch European pump houses! AND he can can deliver here in America!

AND I would bet money that!

We had a diesel liberty back in the day. I babied the hell out of it. It threw a rod catastrophically at 97,000 miles whilst my wife was driving it to work. I replaced the engine with a used one with 42,000 miles and sold it. The next owner sold it a few years later. I've since lost track of it.

It was a lovely engine, but what a poorly made Italian diesel.

Anyone know a shop that can do a Diesel swap for me? I don't have the time nor the knowledge to do this myself. I do have $ which I imagine will be helpful. I've heard good reviews of a TDI swap into TJs but I have yet to see anyone do it in a CJ. Any help would be much appreciated.
I know it’s 1 1/2 year later thread resurrection, I had considered this, but decided I’ll try a deep dive of my own.

I am building a CJ-8 right now, and looking into power plants. I am leaning towards the R2.8. I have a TDK hybrid frame, metal cloak lift, and Aqualu body tub. It is going to be an automatic.

Oh my God, you had my dream 8.... until you used the A word😪. That rig with an AX15 and you'd have the absolutely perfect rig.

Automatics can be good. Then carjackers, valet parkers and teenagers can drive them......

Seriously, no matter how you set it up is sweet as long as it's how you want it. That's the beauty of Jeeps: personalisation. But your setup will be sweet, even with the slush box.

Chamba, I gotta tell ya. Your boredom with the common slush box sure makes me smile every time. I can’t help but think that you might give in and end up owning one someday 😂.
Thanks for all the laughs

I have! My silverado duramax is the first auto I've ever owned. I love the truck, love the engine and even love the spaciousness.

But after 56,000 miles I really HATE the transmission! It's a 10 speed auto. It shifts endlessly in a mindless cycle of mechination. It pulls against the brakes at stop lights (I'm forever putting it in neutral at lights) and it requires greater braking to stop as the engine continues supplying torque despite my desire to stop.

It's great for towing: pulls like a school boy thinking about his homeroom teacher. But towing with an auto is maddening. In order to utilise the momentum of hills to your advantage in the next climb, you must use the manual shift mode; in D it will simply continue upshifting an the way down and then rapid fire back to a gear that is too low on the way back up.

With a standard transmission, there's really no thinking required when towing. With the auto, using the 'manual mode' really requires a great deal of forethought.

Towing our 8400 lb camper trailer up to Cape Cod I averaged 14ish mpg towing in manual mode and 11 in straight auto. I'm confident with a regular manual I could easily average 15+.

Anyway... rant mode off.

I also look forward to the feedback Chamba provides on powertrain threads. I might be on the other side of the fence but that is why we have options!
