Renewed Obsession

It has been so long since I have been on the forum that I think I should re-introduce myself. My name is Rich and I go by Drahcir495. It sounds strange, but it is just Richard backwards. I have an 1984 Scrambler with soon to be with a Chevy 350 V8, T19c transmission and the D300 transfercase. I joined on April 20th 2002 – wow, almost 20 years ago ?!

My obsession with CJ’s started when I saw my first Scrambler. This one was maroon with black interior, rolling on 33” Thornbirds. Just an awesome looking CJ8 and I had to have one. I looked everywhere to try and find one, but it was not as easy as I had hope. Then a maroon Scrambler turned up at a used car dealership in the area. I slept on it and went back the next day to buy it! I got there only to find it had been sold ?. It was actually bought by Garscram on this forum – good guy for someone who stole the Jeep right out from underneath me ?. I ended up getting a CJ7 Jamboree edition; number 495, the second part of my screen name. Drove that Jeep for 7 year until I graduated and got married. Now with two incomes it allowed me to afford another CJ. It was now time to seriously pursue finding my dream Jeep. I was on the classified section here and found one in Arkansas. Got a trailer and picked up a blue 1984 CJ8. It had been converted to accept the Chevy 305 V8 engine. It had the T5 transmission, a Dana 300 transfer case, and 33” Super Swamper tires on chrome steel wheels. The factory air was working and the Jeep was done up with all the Laredo trim. Not sure it is an original Laredo, but that’s not important to me.

When I picked it up (ahh 150 lbs lighter ?) ->

I took the Jeep to a Jeep Jamboree in Tellico (no damage, just a great time) and on the way home a guy pulled into the gas station and ask who owned the Scrambler? He had the half cab hard top for sale. A small jaunt off our path, and $200, I had the top.

Soon after I swapped out the tires on the CJ7. I got the 35” Micky Thompson Baja Belted on to the Scrambler. I have not been able to find the original picture for my avatar, but I have a few light wheeling pictures until I do ->

This is how it sat with in 2009, with, the almost fully erected full soft top, before it had to be put in storage ->

I finally brought it out of storage a little over two months ago. Towing it home ->

And now waiting to put the garage->

I still have to put in the Chevy 350 V8, get new tires as I have no idea why got such big ones. Really don’t have anything else that needs to be done other than that. Maybe a paint job?

I will be sure to post up a lot of pictures as I get stuff done on the Jeep. Very happy to be back on here with a renewed passion.

There must be something in the water with all of us getting back into the CJ-8's at the same time. So, what happened to the engine, grille and fenders "whilst" in storage? Those definitely are some huge meats on it. What size will you go down to? Lowering the suspension a bit as well?

Yes, it could be the cool aid lol.

I am so glad I did not have the money back then to do the absurd mods I wanted to. I guess I fell in love with those Maxxis Creepy Crawler tires. They only offered them in 37”, so that is what I got ?. I would like to go to 35 inch. I will keep the Rubicon Express 4.5” lift since I am very happy with it. Long story, but a poorly built 383 stroker that blew out two pistons in as many months. I have everything apart in the front so I don’t damage anything putting in the new engine.

Good plan! Bummer about the stroker. It probably pulled those 37’s easily though!! Can’t wait to see you get the new mill in there!

I got to tell you, I only punched it once and it scared the heck out of me. A stock 350 will be plenty of power. At least for me. I hope to get it in soon and driving around town.

Had a chance to put on the new rear fender flares on today. Took a stupid amount of time getting them on, but they are a fantastic fit! ->

I am very happy that I asked about replacement options from this group.

I didn’t get anything done on the Jeep today except got my new car cover on the Scrambler. Paid $130 for the Scrambler specific cover from car auto covers.com. I think I put it on backwards the first time, but now I think it’s on the right way. Also they said it would not work with a full hart/soft top. I believe it will, so I am going to take off the half hard top and try it with the full soft top. I think o am going to get rid of the half hard top because with my son it’s going to be a while before he grows out of the car seat. I don’t want to store it either, so anyone looking for one just pm me and we can talk price (y)
Showed up in an unusually small box
