Salvage titles?

How big of a deal would a salvage title be to you if looking at a Scrambler? After 25 or so years, how important is this? FYI, I ask as one that has been mentioned to me was reported stolen, insurance company paid off, then it was found and sold for salvage. This all happened a couple of owners ago.

Just curious. How much should this affect sales price?

Thanks,

John

In Ga. if it is over 10 tears old all you need is a bill of sale.

So a salvage title on a old jeep just means that we are looking at condition rather than what was supposed to be on it.

The salvage title always hurts the value of a vehicle, how much depends on the individual situation, why it has the salvage title, theft recovery is not as damaging as a total accident write off or flood damage. It would also depend on what I want to do with it, restore it to original, mod it and wheel it, daily driver, or as an investment. I have bought them before and paid less and got less when I sold them, alot of buyers won't touch a salvage title vehicle so it may take a little longer to sell. Some insurance companies and banks, if borrowing money, may have issues with the title also.
IMHO, If the condition checked out, I just want it for fun, wheeling, and plan on keeping it, I'd take advantage of saving some money on it, and buy one, but I would not pay the same money for the same thing with a clean title.
Good luck.

On a Scrambler or any old vehicle, my main concern would be solid proof of legal ownership. A title, salvage or not, would hep with this issue. If I'm buying something old, I'm going to look at it's current condition only as I would be buying it as a toy with plans to enjoy it.

salvage title

My 1981 jeep is "blessed" with a salvage title due to a auto accident that caused $500 worth of damage. My insurance company totaled the vehicle because they felt it was not fixing for it $3000 value, I am sure the posts are achieved in the forum somewhere around here. A salvage title makes my jeep all but worthless to auto auctioned or auto car lots, they did not want it in trade when I bought my LJ 4 years ago  (what was I thinking!!) Now, that said I still get a periodic passer by that wants to buy it. SO a true enthusiast with the jeep sickness, would buy it on current condition.

I'm confused....if thet totaled it, why do you still have it?

I "totaled" a Rubicon, so the insurance company gave me a check, then let me buy back the Jeep. Then you just have to rebuild it, get it inspected by your state, and register it.

that last post pretty much sums it up, Insurance company has totals it out, buy back the wreck for what its worth to a salvage yard. Use what remains of your check to try to fix it. It is a huge hassle to get a vehicle R titled and then it does not have much value. It is never going to be quite the same again but it is functional and semi reliable.

Guess one should decide if buying the vehicle back is worth having a salvage title that may reduce the resell value.

Salvage Titles

I have had several CJ-8s with salvage titles. I rebuild them in Indiana, have them inspected and am issued a new title with a "Badge" that states it is a rebuilt vehicle. When reselling them most buyers have just shrugged it off with they now own a completely rebuilt Scrambler.

I have 2 '04 unlimiteds now that have rebuilt "Badged" titles. I just sold a 99 and the bank that was financing it called and ask why I was selling it below book. When I told them they ask if it was a "salvage" or "Rebuilt". I took the title to them and they approved the loan with a big smile.

I'm not sure how other states handle Rebuilt vehicles, But there is a BIG differance in Salvage and Rebuilt here in Indiana.

As far as I know, in Kentucky we have only one classification, salvage and rebuilt are the same thing here.

A crazy thing I ran into here was when I bought my Scrambler in Indiana, good title but not running, and I could not transfer ownership of it here until it was running and "road worthy", which could be years later. I could have had it changed to a salvage title and transfered it right away, but there is no way I would do that. I was planning on taking it off the frame and putting in the new dirvetrain so still not running and still not titled in my name, rediculous.
