I am not going to lie, I chickened out. I did not want to break this thing, so I pulled the steering column apart!!! Sounds drastic, but the best course of action/least risk of damage.

Most columns I pull apart are full of crud. I guess with only 6,500 miles, this one is damn near spotless!!!!!



I kind of winged it/looked it in the FSM, either way, pulling the column apart was not too bad:



I thought maybe a partial pull would allow me better access to the clips:



Nope. So pulled this part of the column completely off:



The dash would clear the orang and white indicator pointy thing, so I left this part of the column intact. A good thing, because IIRC, I would have to start removing transmission shift linkage parts to remove the next part of the column!!!!!!!

Buffed the dash with some 3m stuff, no more bubble wrap marks:





This cowl corrosion bugged me:



A few seconds with some rough grit sand paper:



It looks bad, cleans up nice!!!! I sprayed some Fluid Film on this spot:



Maybe not the best idea, that stuff stinks!!!!!!!!!!

Decided to install all of the gauges, plus some other items on the dash board now, before installing it in the Jeep.

Dashboard paint buffed out really well, minimal hand work.

And the dashboard reinstalled:

I folded the windshield frame down for three reasons:

1) to install the dash board
2) to inspect the cowl
3) to aid ventilation!!!!!

Cowl is good:



Except one spot:



Again, looks terrible. Less then a minute wire brush/sand paper, solid underneath, minimal pitting:



Shot some Fluid Film on this spot, too:



Nice view!! And, installed the dash pad:




I think Jeep CJ's like being worked on in the woods!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Reinstalled the steering column:



In the picture above, only four screws hold the part of the column I pulled off to the remainder of the column (after you disconnect TS wiring and ignition switch). The 5th screw, that the screw driver is pointing at, secures the ignition key lock cylinder into the column. IIRC, my 83's have a tab that you push down to pull/install the key cylinders. Just some trivia....................

Another interesting tid-bit:



The turn signal wiring runs through the black plastic "protective sheath" (attached around the square nuts). The shift quadrant indicator's light bulb wire was routed separately, inside it's own black plastic split tube sheath (my pointer finger is touching it). Just more trivia....

Installed the glove box door, which is keyed to work with the door key:



Called it a day, packed the Jeep back up:



Bonus - the Harbor Freight canopy will almost completely shades not one, but TWO CJ-7's!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!



So, lots of pictures/information to digest on a first day post!!!!!!!!!

Hope to reinstall the steering wheel, wire up the dash board, and start working on other interior items over the next few days.

There it is, 6,490 mile speedometer. Interesting that the orange band from 55 -85 mph has faded? Maybe it is the right color?

Rear fold and tumble seat brackets, they bolt to the wheel wells. Random plugs and a wooden wedge painted black?

Speedo looks correct to me.

Other wires I believe are speaker wires for OEM stereo and speakers.

The factory speakers and radio, that were there, now they are not

So, missing radio and speakers, but I have radio knobs/trims, radio wiring and bracket, and speaker speed nuts....

You have a radio harness and knobs but no radio? Assuming it originally had one. Did you unpack everything?

That plow can be lifted crazy high.

It is currently ratchet strapped up to this height, not sure if the hydraulic system alone will lift it this high? I have zero knowledge of snow plows

Interesting, no radio on the window sticker, but could have been added at the dealership. You bought this thing several months ago, right? So chances of getting it from the seller are probably slim to none.

I sadly sold the factory AM/FM radio from my tan CJ7 back in the 90's. Got $238 for it on ebay, which was a lot of money for a college kid. Cut the dash and put in a Kenwood DIN unit that's still there. Of course, now I wish I had the OEM radio back and hadn't cut the dash.....

Have a NOS AM/FM/CB to go in the Scrambler, but going to have to give the old man a few more years, as he doesn't like me doing any "modifications" to his Scrambler.
