I have a 83 cj8 with a lockup tf999. It originally had 258 but previous owners swapped a 360 in.
2:73 33’s. I like the high gears for mostly road time Although I can’t get a speedo gear for this combination.

When I purchased it had problems with the engone that turned out to be a bent valive. Got engine issues sorted out and able to drive it. Shifts good and lockups like it should. But when it’s warm and locked up and I apply engine throttle lightly it would shudder, presumably lockup converter slipping. I tried oil filte, additives, band adjustments, external cooler, etc. no change.

I found a torque converter company that will rebuild and diagnose so last night everything hit the floor. Sending out converter for diagnosis, then transmission rebuild.

this is the question. My flywheel has a ring gear that’s used by the starter. Why does the torque converter have a ring gear? Was that ring gear used with the 258?

Pretty sure my 258/TF999 has the ring gear on the flexplate - not the TC. Wil be a few days before i can get the pictures.
Are you sure it a TF999? If someone has swapped a 360 you hopefully have a 727 - that may be different.

Not sure, i guess there's so many versions of that transmission 904/999 etc that some had the ring gear on the TC some didn't. I don't know how tolerant the lockup mechanism is to different gearboxes. i.e. is the judder a problem because you have a TC that does not work with a 360/TF999?
