Transmission mount issue

First off, loving the group here. I have been able to learn quite a lot since picking up our 81 Scrambler a couple of months ago.

So, yesterday I changed out the motor mounts. Ended up not being too bad of a job at all. Today, I decided to tackle the transmission mount. This one has led to a bigger issue than I expected. I jacked up the transmission just enough to get the pressure off the skid plate and started taking the bolts off. Removed the skid plate and when I removed the two bolts that hold the mount plate to the transmission housing, all of my transmission fluid started coming out. It was coming from the bolt hole that goes through the trans mount into the housing. I take it that is not supposed to happen. This may explain why I had fluid leaking under the transmission before. I attached a zip file of a video to show.

So, my plan is to let it completely drain overnight and then clean the threads where the bolt goes as much as possible. When I put the bolt back, I will use Loctite Threadlocker blue 242 so it will hopefully seal off that point. Will then finish the install and refill the trans fluid and go from there. Does anyone see any issue with what I have planned? Is there anything else I should be doing or missing?

Thanks for the help,

Transmission fluid should not come out of those holes. What transmission do you have? T-5, T-4, SR-4, T-176? Initial thoughts are there is a crack in the transmission casing OR someone at some point retapped the mount hole and drilled too far and got into the transmission itself. Instead of fixing it, they plugged the hole with the bolt and hoped for the best.

I'm not sure your fix will work, as I'm guessing it will leak again if someone did overdrill the hole. It may stop it for a while, but likely won't fix the problem.

Had a similar issue on my TR6 engine block, always leaked at the front, eventually found that it was one of the alternator mount holes that had been drilled too deep from the factory.
Made a short length of threaded rod and sealed that in (a short grub screw would work) - so that the standard bolt would still fit. Still leaks - but not from there any more.

TRs seem to always have issues. My brother has a TR5 (yes, it’s a 5, he imported it from Spain). He’s always chasing something on it and the TR6s he had previously.

It's the T-176. Yea, I figured it wasn't supposed to come from there. I went ahead with my plan and we will see what happens. Also realized that the fill plug has been torqued on to the point that I can't remove it. Ordered a 9/16 square pipe plug and will see if that works. I just went ahead and filled it from the top cover (removed the shifter) for now with 3.5pints (1.8qts). Hoping this doesn't lead to having to replace this transmission. We will see what the future holds.

Hope your repair holds with no leaks. Sounds like the right option until you have a reason to pull the whole transmission someday down the line.
