trying to decide on gear ratio

AMC 304 - very mildly built - not sure on exact horsepower

TF 727 tranny - no mods

Dana 300 T-case - no mods

GY 35" MTRs

I currently have the factory 2.73s in my axles and trying to decide which route to go on gears. The local shop that will do the work (have done all my re-gearing over the years) aren't in agreement with each other either. A few say 4.10s and others are saying 3.73s. While in there I will have them install a Detroit True Trac in the rear along with 1-piece axles.

This will rarely see the dirt - just being honest here. I'd rather take my JKUR off-road since I look at newer Jeeps as easily replaceable. However it will see the highway - virtualy anywhere I want to go more than 10 miles away from my house involves 1 of 3 highways down here with posted speed limits of 65-70 MPH. I don't want it screaming with gearing too low but I also don't want to be missing out when the random times come when it does leave the pavement such as at my parent's tree farm.

Any experience with the above or similar set-up? I am still chasing a shifting issue I am having with the trans so I have not driven the Jeep on the road much at all plus will need to get it inspected (last year for it here in NC) so no real experience with RPM or power as it sits today.

My 2002 Chevy HD has 410 gears, 35's, and a overdrive auto
I feel like it's definitely more comfortable cruising in overdrive versus just third gear
My suggestion would be 3.73's and 4:1 kit it d300

At least the 4.10s. I run them with 33s and a TF999/360.

I run 4.10's in our CJ-7 with the 4.2/T-5/D300. Easy run 70mph down the highway.

I don't know the 727 well, but 3.73 sounds pretty low numerically. I'm running the 258 - t5 - d300 - 3.73 - 32in. I think after the fact I would rather have 4.10s......

Tire size ?

33x12.5x15's. speedo is pretty close to true without a speedo gear change.

thanks for all the feedback

If the Trans is 1:1 in 3rd I would recommend 3:73. You stated highway driving so that would my choice. If you were in town and off road then 4:10. I have a 360/T176/33's/4:10's. Great set up for in town. Quick off the line and pulls good to 50 but then she wants that 5th gear I don't have. She'll run easily up to 65 but the rpms are nearing the upper 2k range. I don't have any complaints as I wont be doing highways much if at all. I could tell early the 3:73 would be the choice for highway driving. I don't think the slightly larger tire will make a huge difference.

I'm running 4:10 gears and did the Terra Low 4 to 1 reduction in the Tcase on 35's with a 5.7 Hemi and 545RFE 5spd auto trans. With that setup I'm able to do highway speeds easily and it's very efficient offroad as well. With that 304 and 727 trans you'd be fine with 4;10 gears for on and off road. If it's mostly highway you might want to go 3:73 but I would entertain the thought of doing the 4 to 1 reduction in the low end of the Tcase. That way you don't lose the highway gears and you can have the lower gearing for off road.

That's right !!

Sorry about that. I was reading too fast and didn't pick that up. I also saw that I posted my gears as 4:10 but actually they're 4:30. Anyway, good advice on the 4:1 in the Tcase.

Don't be sorry, I meant to point out that that's two votes for 373 and 4 to 1 ratio transfer case

I hear ya but with next to zero plans on taking this off-road I am thinking putting money in to the transfer case would not be efficient versus axles. I am now leaning towards 4.10s but have a few weeks to keep debating.

I have 373 gears, 37 inch tires, 4 to 1 tcase, 671 first gear nv4500 and first gear is usless on the street but it clicks along at 80 all day long.
