Trying to Find the Impossible...

I don’t have a dog in this one, I have an ‘81 and already have a slider in my top. Has anyone considered trying to put a group together here and see if the manufacturer would be interested in making 6 or more sliders for type B? Or however many you can put together?

Hi, Jeepdogs. I might be able to help out. I've got an '85 Scrambler in the middle of a restoration. More importantly, this one has the slider and I am not a fan of sliders. My Jeep has factory A/C so no real need for a slider. Let me know what you have in mind and maybe we can work something out. Stay in touch.

I don't know the difference between Type-A and Type - B tops, but below is where I got my slider for my 1981. I don't have the seat belt's holes so it may not work. But it was in stock according to their website.

My measurements on an 81 top seem to indicate that seat belts work no problem with the 81 window, so opening a later model top to fit the early window should have no effect on the seat belt pass through.

Now the overall shape of the window might make it a bit harder than just “ cutting the hole bigger”. If the late model had a more trapezoidal shape, there might be areas that would have to be filled too.

Again- no real answer unless someone has both pieces of glass and can overlay them.
Thank you for the additional information, Randy. I guess I'll need to get the exact dimensions of the opening in my hardtop and call Collins Bros to see if there is any hope of the Type A window fitting a Type B opening. I thought there was only one size of Type B, but now I've seen what seems to be several different variations. I saw something in passing that made me think some folks have used a small Chevy truck sliding glass and retro-fitted it to work. I'm not a big fan of cutting away at the hard top. Once a mistake is made, I don't have the skills to fix it back. I don't have a problem really if the Type A is bigger, but if if it's a different shape-rectangle vs. trapezoid--I'm not comfortable with creating a new shape. I realize I can get a glass installer to cut the glass but I can't find anyone who could put their hands on the track and locking mechanism. My project is such small potatoes, they don't want to bother with my window. They said they are working three weeks out, so I can understand. If only I could find a window person who is also a Jeep person and would understand the love we have for our Scrams. 8-)

I'll keep watching this thread in hopes that someone has both Type A and Type B glass and can really fill in the details regarding exact sizes of both.

Thanks so much for your help. I've learned more than I thought I needed about sliding back windows. But is there really such a thing as 'too much info' for our beloved Scrams? LOL

Ohhhhhhhh, I'm excited!!!!! Would you like for me to give you the exact size of the opening in my hard top? I can do that when I get home from work today!!! I would LUV your slider if it fits. Depending on where you are, I might be able to come get it. Do you have a price in mind yet?

Thank you so much. I checked out their website and since I believe my hardtop came off an '85, they no longer have the window. They told me it's no longer made. Boooooo! :-(

Maybe this will help. I just climbed up into the storage loft and measured the window opening on my 81 top about 16” up from the bulkhead. This is where the seat belts should come through, this matches the indent in the top and my roll bar. The window opening at this point is 47”. The seat belt bolts in the roll bar are 51” apart. That means there should be 2” from the center of the seat belt holes and the inner edge of the window flange. Should be plenty of room
Thanks Randy for crawling to the loft. I'm going to check out the hardtop that I have to see if my measurements match yours. I wasn't sure about the seat belts making the difference, it was something I read on the internet...and we all know the internet is the gospel, right? hahaha

There’s a guy named Jay Newsome at jeepsalvage.com (or something similar) in Statesboro Georgia that has a boneyard full of old Jeeps, if he is still in business -he may have the aftermarket part you’re looking for.
I tried to find jeepsalvage.com and it seems he no longer has this website. I then searched 'jeep salvage' in Statesboro, GA and and found this website: https://www.salvage-parts.com/junk-yards/salvage-jeep-parts-service-statesboro. Maybe it's the same dude but different website? Either way, I'm gonna check him out. 'Helimd' posted to this thread that he might have a slider for me if the measurements are the same. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it's a match. 8-) Thanks again for the info.

**Update: after looking at this website in more detail, I think it's simply search engine type of website and not the guys actual website.

**Update: I see you are in OK. That's quite a bit of road from North Carolina. So, if your window fits my hardtop, looks like it'll have to be shipped. A pain, I realize, but your window would go to a loving home (haha 8-)) and I would soooooo greatly appreciate it!! I'll let you know the dimensions of my hardtop cutout as soon as I get home.

My fork lift is down until tomorrow. When it gets fixed I will try and get the type A out where I can measure it and make patterns of both windows that I have. They are still installed in the top so it will be inside of the weather stripping. So dimensions will not be exact. They both have to come out at some point but I'm not sure I will get to that tomorrow.

I looked it up. Jay Newsome is located at Salvage Jeep Parts and Service, Statesboro Georgia.

Helimd, did you get a chance to measure your sliding window? My opening, without track and glass is:
Horizontal it's 45 3/4" [top of width measuring under corner curve] then widens to 47" [bottom of width measuring above corner curve]
Vertical it's 17 1/4" on both left & right side [after corner curve] then widens in the middle to 17 3/4".

Does this make sense? I measured the straight sides. So it looks like the open area is a trapezoid, smaller width on top and wider at bottom, going horizontally.

FWIW - I’ve personally drilled holes in an ’81 top to add shoulder belts. Said holes do not interfere with the earlier glass at all.

Thanks 😀. My to use from an '85, I believe, so it already has the seatbelt holes. Finding the slider glass in useable condition is proving to be challenging. I'm still working on a few ways to get one.

Hi Helimd, can you measure your hard top slider for me? I'd really like to get your window if it fits. Thanks.

Hey, Jeepdogs, sorry this has taken a while. I just got back home and will try to get some pics and dimensions. I see you posted your measurements so tomorrow I'll take a look. Again, sorry for the late response.

Thank you for your reply. I look forward to your measurements. Hopefully, I can figure out a way to make yours fit. 🤞🏻
