What is a complete 401 worth?

I think I can get my hands on a complete 401 from intake to exhaust from an old J20. I was told it was running when parked, no internal damage. What is a setup like that worth? It has a/c pump and ALL brackets still attached. I have no use for it but am needing a transmission for my Scramber and could use it to trade or sell for cash. I know from seeing a bare 401 block sell on AMC websites for $1200-1500 every time makes me wander.

I posted this in another forum also for feedback.

thanks,

Bill

Rebuilding It?

I am asumming that you would plan to "freshen it up" before you drop it in, right? That being the case it's gonna cost some money and you need to factor that in if you're going to buy it. Rebuild kits are probably going to be more expensive for the 401 too.

Being complete, but unknown condition. I'd have to consider it a core. $300 to $500 probably, since it's going to cost a bit to rebuild it. If you got it running and ran a compression test with decent results, of course, more.

I can get it for about $150. It has never been touched besides a new air filter. Truck has original 31K miles on it and the guy told me there was a 30 day warranty on if it smokes or has mechanical failure. I think I will go ahead and get it, run it on a test stand and store it for future build/project. 401's are hard to come by here in Tn. Everybody makes rock crawlers out of them around here.

thanks for the input.

He wants to run a 401...I think he still sleeps with it... because it still had 258 in it at Nationals.

$150 is a smokin' deal for the motor. The forged crankshaft itself is worth a whole lot more than that by itself...

Thats what I am talking about. Just the crank/blocks would fare a good amount. The AMX'ers would be all over that.

I don't know of a hacked up Scramber around here. I know of about 6 and they are all pretty decent shape with OEM motors. Except one with a Chebby shortblock.

thanks for the replies,

Bill

wow if it is worth that..i would buy it and sell it and use the proceeds for a efi chevy..
i guess.... they are hard to find down here and the people that have are in love with them so when it comes time tosell them they think that they can command a premium.

I am not into ripping someone off for a resale and never have been. I have to go pull the motor myself so I wil have time/busted knuckles in it also. I was just curious about what it would go for and trying to increase my funds to help with my Scrambler. I am a debt free goo roo and use my cash wisely to complete projects. I just finished my CJ5 project with over $15K in reciepts and paid for it with cash. Now I am working on my Scrambler and starting with the engine/drivetrain to collect/gather parts and info.

If I could get it for less than 200 + my time I would probably sell it for around 600-700 and not feel that I am gouging someone. If I were looking for a good drop in 401 I feel that would be a good price. I just needed a feeler thats all.

thanks for all the input and if anyone is interested they can PM me for info.

thanks,
Bill

I have seen running 401s go for $700-1100, but without much history on the motor. Just make sure it's actually a 401 (casting numbers under the driver motor mount). No, you wouldn't be ripping someone off. You would have time into pulling it (something a LOT of people don't think much about), and it's still a good value for someone looking for a 401. Good luck!

If I was in TN I would give you $5000 for it. But since I'm not I will tell you I bought a running 401 for $400 in Fort Collins.

Just don't put a Howell on it, right Dennis?
