So my '81 scrambler has the original paint and decals on it and I have no intention of getting rid of it or re-doing the paint. I need some advice from the scrambler nation.
My question is what is the best way to protect the paint and keep it the way it is for as long as possible? There are some areas where bare metal is showing through and some smaller areas of surface rust that is beginning. I want to keep the paint and the patina that the scrambler has earned over the years. Also some of the original decals have warn off or faded in areas.
So do I:
1. Keep the paint and the decals the way they are and just buff it out really nice
2. Keep the paint and decals the way they are, buff it out really nice AND then have it clear coated for better protection
3. Replace the warn decals and then do either of the above
As for the small areas of bare metal and surface rust what is the best plan of action for them?
1. Leave them as they are
2. Remove the surface rust and clear coat the areas
-or any other ways to go about the above problems
Now the pictures:
First a few of the whole jeep:

This is the patina, you can see the bare metal in the middle

Some areas of bare metal and surface rust:
This is light surface rust on the door jam

Examples of the cracking decals:

Basically looking for what the best plan is to preserve whats there and how to best protect it from further damage.
Thanks for the help guys

. You might want to consider pulling all of the hinges off and painting the bare metal you will find underneath. Also, the front fender to body tub will be bare metal.
