What's your Career?

I became a volunteer firefighter at 20 while going to college. I should have just saved my money on the next 4 years of my college career as most of my time was spent partying and chasing girls. After 6 years of school and no where near close to being a doctor I settled for a BA in General Studies with a minor in history. After school I took a contract job with the National Science Foundation doing fire protection for McMurdo Station in Antarctica. I spent the next several years going back and forth from the States to the "Ice" and doing quite a bit of traveling around New Zealand and Australia. I then worked several jobs from retail to security at a casino to working as an EMT on an ambulance. I'm now doing what I love and working as a firefighter/EMT for the Columbia, MO Fire Department and getting ready to do my first CJ restoration! On a side note, for the last 3 years I've been dating a wonderful girl whose parents just happen to own and operate a full-time hot rod shop (he does body and paint and she does full custom interiors) so I'm hoping to get to use a corner of the shop for the Jeep! :D

I worked as a grunt in an electric motor shop while in college. Got a Mech. Eng. Tech. degree and moved to MN in 96. Spent a year doing CAD work, then 4 years overseeing an assembly line of electro-mechanical devices. Moved back to IN and worked on a masters degree followed by 2 years of teaching in the same department. When it was clear the position wouldn't be permanent, I moved out of the classroom and got a job as a systems engineer at a Bio-Med start-up company. I survived a year before they tacked on spontaneous field service travel and it became too much to manage with 2 kids at home and a wife with her own demanding career. I found a job as an application engineer and now work for a metal bellows company (flexible steel tubing). My primary focus is on thermal expansion joints and exhaust decouplers for diesel engines and heavy equipment.

So that occupies my days while the family, hobby farm and Jeep take up the rest of my time.

Architect - retail, government, residential. licensed all over the country, travel from coast to coast.

Shipped to boot-camp from San Antonio 90 days after high school graduation. Spent the next 11ish years as a Marine...started out as an avionics tech but wound up through happenstance in the IT career field. Separated from the military in 2002 and became a defense contractor doing IT security for a variety of agencies and a variety of locations. I now work for my uncle (Sam) doing more of the same in Washington D.C. Life is good...

Okay. break out the popcorn.

My father was a rocket scientist in Huntsville, AL and I grew up in the heyday of the space program. Wanted to be an Aerospace engineer, got accepted at Auburn but my father counseled against a career in space, said there was no real vision beyond the moon program, so I switched to civil engineering. Co-oped through college working highway construction, married my 5th year, and moved to Virginia on wife's job with Philip Morris (masters in IE Computer Science). It was bad times in the construction industry so I took a job with the highway contractors' trade association as their Director of Engineering.

Traded associations in the early 80's and have represented the asphalt paving industry for the past 28 years, became an "asphalt expert" and do consulting on the side, mostly international.

All that makes me...old, tired and short on "Jeep time"!

That all falls under "consulting". :D :D :D :D And you would be surprised at how much bad asphalt I find under old Jeeps. I think this is going to take further study!
