Windshield gasket and frame issue

I just had a new windshield installed. When they put the new one in, I noticed a bit of rust in the windshield frame. I also see that between the windshield gasket and the windshield frame, there is a gap...that water can go into.

On the one hand, if left the way it is, water can go in, but also flow out and/or be exposed to air and possibly dry out. But sealing it up would hopefully keep all the water out in the first place (if sealed perfectly - but if water gets in now it's trapped). Is it recommended to put some kind of caulk or glazing in that gap, or leave it as is?

Sounds like new glass in an old windshield gasket. Black silicone will help. When I get a new glass installed anymore, I get the later version where the rubber is already sealed to the glass and they goop it into the frame and there is no water ever getting in from there. They put another rubber extrusion on the frame first so the inside looks normal. You might need a new windshield rubber that seals like it should.

This is news to me if I'm understanding what you're saying you're getting. I didn't know there was an option other than glass in a separate gasket? Have a link to this setup anywhere?

I did the black sealant on mine around the edge of the seal. I don't know that there are any modern seals that properly seat, seems to be common to have the gap. Pulling/reinstalling glass seems like a great way to have to end up buying another windshield and I didn't see much chance that another gasket would be better anyway, so I rolled with it.

The windshield opening is the same in our CJs as it is in YJs and probably TJs. When I go to the glass shop I have them order the later glass with the rubber lip already on the front side of the glass and the separate extruded rubber that goes on the frame first. My wife's Scrambler has the original glass and rubber gasket and I've used silicone between the rubber and the steel, and between the rubber and the glass because the water has a way of getting in.

That’s why I try not to drive mine in the rain. Between the glass leaking in the corners and the water getting In between the frame and body some days it’s a typhoon in the cab
