What year did they first put Wide Track axles in Scramblers ? Did they put NT axles in CJ8's at all ?
Drew

1st year for widetrack axles in all but CJ-5: 1982
Narrow tracks put in 1981 Scramblers.

CJ-5's NEVER got the widetracks... last year of production: '82

In theory.....all '81s are NT, all '82 to '86 are WT. In reality, '82 was a crossover year and came both ways.

1981 had narrow track axles- 1982 and up all had wide track.
Best of luck.
Kyle

wide track

I believe the first year of widetrack axles in scramblers exclusively was 83(not positive but 82's are mixed from what i've seen) but i know they used narrowtracks on early scramblers 81 and 82.
hope this helps,

Well, not sure why yet but my '81 is WT on rear (57" wms/wms) and NT on front (54" wms/wms). I've emailed PO to find out if he put rear axle on later but have not heard back yet. I figured they were both WT as they don't look any different, but I measured to make sure. Or maybe this was a mixed year where they put on different widths until they used up all the inventory.
Thanks,
Drew

With Jeep - in the early '80's - dang near anything is possible - intentionally or otherwise. Maybe yours was one of those assembled on the Monday morning following a particularly 'big weekend' by the axle crew. :p (Stranger things have happened... ; .)

Just for the record. You want your front axles wider then the rear. You should find a front wide track and swap that in.

Good Luck!

Drew - I think I can use some wheel spacers to bring the front out a little to match the back (FYI everybody else...Drew and I are working out a swap). I'm doing a little research on that now.

I just went out and took the wheels and tires off my widetracks. The best measurement I could come up with was WMS 56" rear, WMS 56.25" front, but that was with nobody else holding the other end of the tape measure so that may be off just a little.

Well you can if you like, but the difference in the front and rear IMHO is insignificant. I would not waste my money on spacers unless there is something to be gained. I"ve owned this Jeep since December and I have never noticed it until I measured it yesterday, it's certainly not been evident in the handling or driving on the road either. There have been lots of people looked closely at it too and have never noticed it. But it's your call.

Wow, that might be a record for the most posts ever in a two minute span :D

Way to answer the HECK out of that question guys!!! ;)

For the record, both axles are widetracks, so that worked out well!
