this is my Red 82 Scrambler that I'm going to try and bust a move on to get ready for Nationals next month in Tenn. I only have 2 available weekend besides this one to get this done. The tub was getting so bad it was dangerous, so had to be pulled. It will be replaced with a different one I have...it needs repair as well but not near as much. Also needs a new kickdown cable, fuel pump, steering column bearing. Also will put a roll cage I already have into it. Other things it doesn't need but may do if I have time: Swap the NP 205 transfer case for D300 to get the lower gearing. Put a different shifter on it. May swap springs.

Some buddies from Beltway4WD came over today and helped me get the jeep broken down enough to pull the tub.

Those rocker guards make great handles, but you could have raked the leaves....

Awesome! Helpful mechanical thoughts coming at you man!

May the Jeep gods have pity on your schedule to help things go smooth and quick for the build.

that was my quicky fix for overheating for one trip and it worked great so never got around to changing it. It is a Taurus fan mounted on the front wired to be a pusher...I'm going for the botty fab award at Nationals :smokin:

Over the last couple of evenings with a lot of my buddy Jake's help we've gotten several more things done.

- Pulled the TH350 & D300 out of CJ7 I had sitting around
- Pulled the TH350 & NP205 out of the scrambler
- Had to drill out and weld in a couple of new nuts for the skid plate (Can I say I hate welding over my head - really need to get a welding jacket. Got burnt a couple of times even though I was wearing a jacket it burned through it )
- Welded up cracks in crossmember in front of fuel tank
- tested fuel pump and it works so now have to figure out wiring issue

how u getting there

you planning on towing it?

did you ever get the tow rig running again?

Matt

Hey Matt, he told me he got the tow rig together and running.

Tow rig is running. After the engine swap and after doing a lot of diagnosing it ended up being the glow plug controler card not working correctly (it was intermittant). So I put a manual glow plug switch in and it has been running as good as it used to. As a matter of fact it is the only thing I have as a driver right now since the zj is down and I can't figure it out :banghead:

Moving along...with Jake's help again this week we got the tranny & transfer case bolted up to the engine. Now I just need to get it mounted to the skid (may have to drill a couple of new mounting holes). Thinking about getting a clocking ring as well to get the D300 turned up a little. We got the frame rot cut out and new steel welded in. Also reenforced a corner behind the gas tank crossmember with an angle bracket.

More fun, today. Gotta literally dig out the tub I'm gonna use as the 'parts shed" as I called it (one of those 10x20 portable garages) collapsed this winter under all the snow.

Okay before I went on vacation to sunny Destin, FL. We did get a little done. The whole point of originally doing this was the tub was shot. Here are a few pics of the tub we took off. 5 body mounts were completely rusted away and missing.

I dug this tub out of my collapsed parts shed (thanks to the heavy snow we had this winter). It needed a little more work then I thought we had time to accomplish.

So I decided if I'm going to do something temporary and just pull it off again anyway why not use the better tub I had. So, I pulled out the tub I bought from Tiny May that was in a engine fire. All it really needed was the surface rust cleaned off it. Mind you it was in a fire so the surface rust was every where. We started a little wire wheeling and a little sandblasting. Still have work to do. The bald guy in the pic is my buddy Jake who has been a tremendous help getting this ready. He is coming to Nationals with me.

The bulkhead was a piece of diamond plate that was welded in. So we had to cut it out. Really wish I'd had a plasma cutter!!!

This is Jake again, having fun with the sandblaster.

So, since I've been back. Gotten a few things done! There were several things to fix on rolling chassis while the tub was off. As stated earlier, swapped the TH350/NP205 with a TH350/D300. Thanks to Eric Kohl, I got a rear yoke that works with the Tom Woods drive shaft. Made a plate and welded it for the traction bar that I never put on after I bought the D60s. It is now good to go. Noticed the rear brake line was rubbing the gas tank skid so did a little mod and flipped it around. Added a kickdown cable (missing before). Cut the cats out since they were in the way and will replace with straight pipe.

Also wanted to keep my tuffy overhead console so worked on adding a couple of pieces of angle iron to the roll cage so I can mount it to them.

Finally, me as a pin cushion after using the wire wheel.

You're sandblasting a temporary body when you're trying to reassemble a Scrambler in a matter of days...

Yes, but we are only sand blasting the hard to reach parts so I only have to do it once. The rest will be wire wheeled and primed, because it will be easy to take that back off.

Hope to put the tub back on either Sat or Sun. You local yokels are welcome to come by and help.

WAY TO GO TRUCK.Looking good, lots of progress. It doesn't need to be pretty, just functional.   :banghead::cheers::cheers:

Doesn't look like much but got the back of the cab to the firewall "rust encapsulated" that also included the engine side of the firewall. Then top coated the engine side firewall with black hammerite. Got the cab floor clean enough to primer (it will come off again when I use this tub later for bedliner). Chased with a tap all the body mount, seat belt, seat mount and roll bar capture nuts. Had to drill holes through the diamond plate for roll bar bolt because it was never done when the plate was put in the bed. Put straight pipe on the exhaust. New hose and wire on the fuel pump. Cleaned and hammerited the body mounts on the frame. Connected the tranny cooler. Removed the dash, wiring harness and pedal assembly from the old tub.

Finally, this afternoon had some folks from my local club Beltway 4WD come over and help mount the tub and new daystar body lift.

So, still a lot to do in the next few days but it is starting to look like a Scrambler again.
