2010 National Scramble: June 24-26th, Sparta TN

Your definition of mild trails and mine might be a good bit different. I see a lift, big tires and a winch. You're at LEAST moderate :D

That's a tough call if one is the only option... Good thing is that it sure looks like you can't go wrong either way

Eric
My version of mild trails would be high blue to low black or 6-8 range depending how they are rated. Wheeling the Scrambler over the last few years has made me a much better driver. Tire placement, throttle input, when to use your rails as a pivot point etc where easy when Im trying to get the rig out unscahthed because well . . . its a Scrambler and not your dime a dozen TJ.
Even more fun when Im guiding a bunch of Wranglers with half a catalog thrown at them and show them what they are actually capable of.:D
I just LOVE to wheel . . . its that simple friend.
Ive gotten alot of flack over wheeling it from others but to me its like owning a corvette and never getting over 45MPH . . . whats the fun in that?;)

I certainly understand the issues with time and money to get to the National, I know it's been my problem since the first one I got to, but two things to keep in mind:
1. the SOA rotates this event around the country to help all members at least have a shot at getting there, so it could be three more years before its this close to where you are again, and
2. even with the rotation, the SOA won't host this in the extremes of the country because it would prevent too many people from coming, so no southern California, no Maine, no NC, etc. A large percentage of attendees are non-trailer folks that drive their rigs to the event and the SOA has to take that into account.

Just laying that out there in case you're looking at a 10, 14, whatever hour drive and thinking that maybe it will be closer sometime soon.

I'm thinking you guys need to rethink Maine...I'd go.

J/K I understand the why behind it.

How about Rausch Creek in PA for a future location?

We'll be driving the Scrambler up this coming weekend to the park to do some scouting. George (GScram) will be coming up too.

We should have a much better feel (and some pictures) of accomodations after this weekend. We'll check out the park ammenities as well as local hotels etc and should have info next week.

Registration is open.
Eric (Bigwalton) has made a great registration form online.
Here's a link.

Also, here's a link to the parks new website.
A friend of mine is working on it for Golden Mountain and he'll be adding content in coming days so keep on checking in.

So Jake, what did you find out?

So Jake, what did you find out?

Well the weekend turned out to be a little bit of a bust for us due to the weather. Rained the entire time we were up there and had been raining for a few days leading up to our trip. Trail access was, well, limited to say the least. We did get a better feel for the facilities, particularly our pavillion which is HUGE! Trails do look very good - just entirely too sloppy to try out in this trip. Looks like there's a very good variety of difficulties which is great for our group. I did take some pictures and will try to post them this evening when I get home from work.

We did go out to eat with Allan Sewell and his wife (Scrambler owners in the Cookville area). We ate some good BBQ at a BBQ joint Allan suggested as a possible caterer for our Saturday night dinner. I'll be getting in touch with them.

Allan has been helping us on the hotel options folks will have to choose from in the Cookville and Sparta areas - THANK YOU ALLAN!
We (officers and Allan) are working on finalizing the details of that list and should have it soon (within the next day or so).
Also, on site - RV hookups are brand new and are right next to the main pavillion we'll be using and the campground (tent or popup camper camping) is right there too.
Here's a link to some pics I took that are now on the Golden Mtn. website of those areas.

I am pretty sure I'll be headed back up there soon (possibly before the end of March and again in April) so there will be more opportunities for trail scouting etc.

EDIT: Pictures added from the wet weekend.
Link.

Hope to get more pics and better idea of what trails are out there after next trip up.

OK looks like I can only reasonably bring one of our rigs to this event. Should I bring the Scrambler and play on mild trails?

My vote: BRING THE SCRAMBLER!!!!!!
It's a Scrambler event. You can wheel the other one anytime.

Lodging, Parts Stores and Things To Do

The attached list is in progress, but we wanted to get something out for people to start making plans. The information on parking and the ratings are FYI, it's up to you to determine if a place is suitable or not by confirming any necessary details.

There are no group rates or anything at any of these hotels, we would have to commit to a block of a certain number of rooms and we did not feel that was feasible.

We will post any updates/additions to the list as they are available.

As for camping at the park, there's information on the Golden Mountain website

As of now, the bunkhouses are all reserved, any camping reservations are separate from the event fee and arrangements/payment need to be made directly to the park.

Things are looking better at our possible attendance. After discussing the cost for the horse show and "bang for the buck", the girls have decided not to take their horses to the show.

Further, while Stephanie still has to go to Clemson, she is thinking that even if move-in day is Saturday, she is willing to wait til Sunday so she can make the event. She seems to really have liked the last event.

That is great news!

Hope you both can make it Eric and Stephanie!

I know Mr. Beep is coming with his son T.D.
Sam is planning on coming too. Not sure yet about Melanie & Julia.
I printed the list of Motels and stuck it in a box of parts headed to Mr. Beep's. Sam is going over there to fix a rear spring hanger on his mother's Scrambler tomorrow. It's over there getting the power brakes installed and A/C. WooWhoo!! Those two are supposed to pick a motel for the 3 groups of us.

June is getting closer...

I'm in

Planning on getting there on Wend. and heading home Sunday. As Kevin posted, TD will join me again this year. This is his Christmas present from the wife & kids (up to 5 as of this week, another boy) to spend a week with Grandpa. I'm the winner I believe.;)

Looking forward to seeing everyone again. And yes Ken (PappyWahoo), I'm bringing a spare Scrambler this year. :o

ALERT: Waiver form for park!

The park requires that everyone coming fills out the attached waiver. Print it off and fill it out so you're all set when you get there

Final hotel/to-do/part store list

Here's the finalized list with all the hotel, part store and other things to do info.

Also, for anyone looking to camp or for an RV spot needs to call directly to the park and make arrangements ASAP. All of the bunkhouses are apparently taken.

Thanks for the updates, BW.

I made reservations this week at the Knights Inn for Me & Beth, Toby & TD, Sam & Melanie and Debbie & Gary. It's really cheap. Less than $40 a night. Sam busted my chops because it doesn't have wi-fi. I told him I'll be happy if it has sheets and towels.

If you decide to stay there, I highly recommend the on-line reservation method, unless you are fluent in Hindi.

Tshirt teaser

Here's a sneak peek at the graphic for the t-shirts for this year.

Folks, I just made hotel reservations for us at the Days Inn, but I checked a number of hotels before I reserved, looking for a decent deal and well-reviewed hotel.

I found something I'd never seen before in all the hotel reservations I've made, maybe it's a new thing, but lots of hotels are offering "advance purchase" rates, which are low, but where they charge you immediately for the full stay + tax and you can't cancel. Since these are the lowest rates, they're the ones that show up when you use search/travel sites like travelocity, orbitz, hotels.com, kayak.com, etc. If you don't happen to pay attention to the cancellation policy or terms, you could miss what you're committing to.

We wanted to have the ability to cancel and possibly camp somewhere (may not be able to do it at the park due to limited spaces, but still) especially if Kate and Laura don't end up coming for whatever reason (then I'll definitely just camp somewhere myself).

Anyway, be aware of the cancellation policies on the rates as your booking, the two places I saw that did advance purchase didn't do enough (IMHO) to make you aware that the cheap rate was due to not being able to cancel and that your card would be hit immediately for the full amount. Just FYI
