Weekend Exploring

Took the 8 along with the two boys (Matt and Ryan) and their Grandfather and did some exploring on top of Alamo Mtn. in the Los Padres forrest. Alamo used to be a great place to camp and hunt, Dutchman campground is a jumping off point for the Miller Jeep Trail. Since the devistating Day fire in 2006, much of Alamo Mtn and the surrounding area was almost wiped clean of pine trees. Much of the mountain is now a dirt pile with prarie grass. Still had a great time. Lancaster topped out at 106, while we were at a comfortable 75 with a nice breeze.

Replaced the alternator and a 50 amp fuse this weekend after trying to take the 8 to Denver from Pueblo (120 miles). Kept losing power and it finally died on us in Parker. Replaced it and everything is a ok! So we took it to go get flowers for the front yard today. It is nice having that extra room compared to the wife's little TJ.
 
Well.... Yesterday....
Installed the Rusty's Off Road 2.5" lift kit then added the 32x11.50 BFGs on 15x8s that had been waiting to go on!!

Thanks. With the lift and new tires it raised the jeep about 3.5 inches total!


 
I have a 2.5 inch lift and .5 inch shackle lift and am sitting on 31s. I am thinking of going 32 with the next tires. We will see.

Assembly... Lots of it. Learned I can't bench press a T5 and Dana 300 together. Learned that no matter how well you document the teardown that stuff always pops up on the build up. Like a skid plate that was 3/8" too wide to accept the factory frame holes.

But... in the end, it's back together with a test drive scheduled for tomorrow. Fingers crossed that nothing terrible pops up.
 
Pulled carb, intake and exhaust manifolds and valve cover to track down a motor noise. The valve cover was sealed good before pulling. Checked for loose rockers and push rods and then found out they are "auto-adjusting"... LOL. So checked to make sure they were all torqued down appropriately. Then re-assembly without an exhaust manifold gasket to try to get the exhaust leaks gone. Well, that did the trick for the exhaust. Now the valve cover is leaking again. And to top it off, the temp gauge quit working and I installed a mechanical oil pressure gauge and it is reading 0.... So more troubleshooting and re-install on valve cover. Shut down for the day due to frustration level. Everything in steps as always with an older vehicle.
 
Drove it for the first time in 2 weeks after rebuilding the T5/Dana 300/Clutch and U joints for the drive shafts. Transmission is great, Clutch is rough, and as for the transfer case... No speedo and no 4 Lo. Working out the kinks at the moment

Stepping away and coming back was good. I can fix the valve cover leak. Gauges - well, let's just say too many years of working on chevy's has got me too trained. I pulled the sender on the back of the head and plumbed in my mechanical gauge there. Temp sender.... So that was a doh moment. I will replace that and plumb in my oil pressure gauge accordingly.

Wife took pictures of the boy and I on the road to bring the Jeep over to get exhaust set up tonight. It was his first ride in it in a couple years. He wanted to ride with me in that loud rattle trap instead of quiet and air conditioning.

WOW, that first one brought back a lot of memories of Anchorage with my brother tailing me in his Subaru trying to get it from the PO's shop back to his house to do all the prep work...

FANTASTIC to see yours out on the road, can't wait to have ours together again. Makes me want to put the hard top back on :eek:
 
Traced a loose ground wire and installed a BestTop driver seat. No, the loose ground was not in the driver seat.

All in all it's great

I need to move my shock mounts the axles. The lift that came with the jeep I thought was a 4", it's a 2.5". That means the 9" travel shocks that I set up with 4.5" up only have 1.5" to 2" up travel now:(
