What's on your Work Bench?

Got two daughters from the first go round. They're 9 and 11 and going from the cute fun stage to the brooding, "really dad?" stage. Ganging up on me with with the new wife about all my "junk".

Anyhow, the wife and I dated for about 4 years. She told me early on that she'd never ask me to sell a Jeep (although she did say "no more vehicles unless you sell one"), but given the limited time I have to work on what I have, that's not an issue. I always have the shop on the farm if something comes along that is too good to pass up.

That's what I need .... a farm with a shop. I have a garage that is too small to even have a workbench. I use the tops of my recycle and trash toters. Ugh. I am now thinking of how I can build one that would not take too much space in front of the Jeep. I have three workbenches in the basement, but who wants to run through the house to do little crap all of the time. And I really need my new vice in the garage!

I use my garbage cans all the time to put stuff on... turn them upside down and they will support a frame!

But yeah, vices and a bench belong in the garage!

Two of my three work benches are on cans. Easy to move and you can make the size you need with plywood lids.P1090381.jpgP1090387.jpg

Those of you who don't have kids, don't be fooled! They start out cute as hell, but eventually they are pretty much only good for burning gas and getting the jeep dirty when they take it to haul their bikes and kayaks  Okay, I'm mostly (but only mostly) kidding.

As far as what's on my bench, it's not pretty.

Apparently AUDI/VW engineers decided that the last foot of the oil stick tube should be made out of plastic  I changed my oil last week and when I put the dip stick back in, the top of the plastic piece pretty much disintegrated. Hopefully not sending too many small pieces into the oil pan :banghead: There are many threads debating whether this would be a problem, but I have seen one picture showing the bits being stopped by the oil pickup. Now begins the delicate task of pulling the 15 year old one out without dropping more pieces in :fingerscrossed:

I don't know how you guys can get anything done with a bench like that. I'm not criticizing, as I'm in awe. You're made of sterner stuff than me. I'd post a picture of my shelves with each container labeled with a DYMO, but you would probably just laugh at me...

I replaced one last January. I put tape around it beforw pulling it off. I slid a small hose down the tube and taped it to a shop vac first to vacuum any little bits put. Takes time as the hose is small and clogs easliy. Left the hose it old tube and took old tube off. Put a small block of wood on new tube and gently tapped it in. Keep new tube warm until install time. It was 25 out when i did mine. Did not nees it cold and brittle. Easy job. Easier in a shop and above 25.

Thanks just did mine yesterday before I read this. I did heat it up with my heat gun but I didn't think of the idea of using the tape and vacuum. Both are great ideas.

Here's my mess. Will probably stay this way till spring when I go back to work.P1090421.jpgP1090422.jpg

Clearly you work like I do, everything out and within easy reach. Hate having to open drawers all the time. When the inevitable clean up time comes I bulldoze everything to one end with my arm to the right then pick out all the spanners into a pile, all the screws into another pile, screwdrivers and so on. Then the piles all are easy to put away. As the bulldozed pile gets smaller and the "good" piles get bigger I just keep bulldozing the bad pile more toward the end. What's left after the good pile bad pile fiasco is finished can generally go straight in the bin. Phew glad I wrote all that. Cup of tea time :tea:

Meant to put the pic here...

You guys just don't know I'd given up even trying to get these.
Back story: I had never even heard of "forums" let alone participated. I was doing a reno on my 84CJ7 Renegade. I gooooooogled Sebring Red and hit on Keith460's build on JU. WOW a whole new world presented. Anaways I have ended up learning so much and enjoying my new "other life" on this forum and JF (sorry JU) Everyone on JF bags the shite out of our funky fender lights but you blokes love them. Ironically it is a JF guy Gilles who got me to the gettin place now I have lots for past, current and future projects.
Just sayin.

What did you buy out the supply in the UK or did you find some in OZ? :) Have you ever found the wedges over there ? (The part that goes between light and fender)

From what I've seen the base dose not exist. Worst part is I got a hole in one on the OL. That will take some fixing.

I may have a plastic wedge or two kicking about somewhere, dont think it has any holes in it apart from for the wiring, they are made of plastic and curved like the fender aren't they??
