My old 1981 SCRAMBLER returns 25 years later

Looks about the same color as mine... I'll pm you my address you can just crate those up and send them my way!! :rotfl: hahaha!

I decided to bolt the armor on to do the color sand and buff. There's a little less chance of damage. :fingerscrossed:

The paint appears to match, and went on nice, almost nice enough to not bother with sanding and buffing.

And yes the Jeep is covered in dust and dirt

Your doing it "just the way we like it".. Color turned out great!

z.

Gotta admit, color looks good. Look at it at 20ft and you have to really look to see it's armor.

Made up a new recovery jug for the radiator after work. That way I can get rid of the plastic peanut jar that was deforming from heat.

Also started to tear into the engine to see why I'm getting uneven burn from left to right......And put in the roller cam, lifters, and rockers.

Did a little more on the engine over the past few days. Didn't find anything obvious that would be causing my Afr difference from left to right. I didn't have a way to pressure test the valves in the heads so I turned them upside down and poured the valve cavity full of oil and let them sit. none of them leaked the first night, but after 36 hours there two intake ports on the right head that had puddles of oil in them. I'll be doing more testing on them when the Jeep's back together. Sooooo I had another set of vortec heads that have about the same mileage (10K) and already had the comp cams beehive springs. That's the one's I put back on. The roller cam is in, the "new" heads on, roller rockers installed, and intake on. While I had the timing cover off I installed the one that I made for my last motor that has a crank sensor. That gives me the option of distributerless ignition in the future. Then progress slowed down, the valve covers aren't tall enough to clear the rocker retainer nuts. New ones will be here Tuesday.

Here's the next motor update.

I ran into a few issues putting the motor back together.

first the rocker adjusting nuts hit the valve covers..............

solution..........................
new tall valve covers

they weren't without issues too, they hit my rams horn exhaust manifolds...............grinder fixed that.

Then when I went to put the accessories on the front, the A/C bracket hit the taller valve cover..........sawed off a ear for the a/c pump.

Then the a/c compressor hit the valve cover..........added 1 1/2" spacers and a longer belt. I used pipe spacers on 3 of the 4 mounting points temporarily and have to machine some custom mount rails before I run the compressor.

Then once I fired it up I had major lifter noise. Off came the valve covers. long story short the rocker nuts didn't match the rockers.

next time it ran still had some rocker noise, acted like a couple lifters didn't pump up, but never changed.
Did more reading, and found out the GM performance roller rockers need 1 turn adjustment. Not the 1/2 turn I gave them.
3rd times a charm, sounds great.

Did a little test "power braking" in the shop and it looks like the AFR is staying even left and right. :woot: and that was the goal of this :woot:

still need to finish some plumbing and wiring, then the fenders can go on.

Made some more headway today. :woot:

finished up some wiring and plumbing. Mounted the winch. Trimmed the rock rails back. mounted the winch.

Now I just have to buff the fenders, install the inner fenders, wire the winch, and finish the AC mounts

Looking great! Where did you get the valve covers? I'm looking for some like that.
