Today's project was the rear lights. First I carefully removed the Savvy LED's, they will be going on Red eventually. The second set of holes were required to get the Savvy lights to clear the filler on the other side.

Carefully mark for the cut.

Drilled the corners and used the body saw to clean it up.

Both sides done. I used some touch up paint to seal the bare cuts.

Cut some gaskets from closed cell craft foam sheeting. Works great.

Ran the wires through an oval grommet.

And the grommet installed. The cut puts the light inside the body, this is a sanitary way to run the wires back outside. Should have grabbed shorter stainless screws.

Next I cut 3/4" holes for the side markers, seeing as the Mil lights have none.

Wired the lights to waterproof connectors.

Installed.

Next step was to make a jumper harness, form the simple stock 3 wire to a weatherpack 4 wire for the Mil light, another 2 pin weatherpack for future wiring of the blackout function, a connector for the marker lights, another weatherpack for the backup lights , and a ground. Whew!

They work!

The stainless filler bezel looks out of place now, guess I'll have another upgrade part for Red.

Dusk shot. I installed temporary backup lights under the bumper. The nice ones will have to wait until the bumper gets built.

Time for some driveway glamor shots. Grainy from my phone, however.

Next project will probably be cutting the alley lights into the rockers, and then on to the bumpers. Got a busy 3 weeks coming- Birthday Saturday, Carol's taking me to the coast for a week, then I'm putting in 2 weeks 8-5 at the Ford dealer to cover a vacation. Oh, and my Mom's coming up to visit after that. Scrambler time will be a precious commodity...

By the way...I have finally decided on a paint color. Commando Green. Not for everybody, but I like it.

Love the look in the dark with the LEDs, but have to say the external-mount housings aren't for me, but that's what's great about Jeeps, right? To each their own, I can see the appeal if you're into that look.

BTW, the tabs on your browser in that pic of the green Jeep made me :rotfl: Perfect :bacon:

I was wondering if someone was going to catch that!

The housings have a " love or hate " look to them. I think against the copper they look a bit off, but once I get the rest of the armor built/powder coated/installed they will look more at home. Once I paint, I need to decide if the housings will stay OD or go to satin black. I'm going to swap over my door handles to black (hopefully I can find some quality ones, the Quadratec replacement chrome one is already rusting and feels like it's about to break).

Also contemplating doing something with the wheels, possibly coat them black and argent and add matching green rock rings.

Lights look amazing. Of course I'm partial to the housings
Is the black-out feature working?

Not yet. I'm going to run a dpst switch that will turn on the front and rear running blackouts, and trigger relays that will switch the brake feed from the main lamps to the blackout. But that is down the road, next project is bumpers.

Working through the details in my head right now, but my Copper Scrambler will most likely be up for sale soon. Got to finish some things, and decide if a repaint is worth it to sell. I'm going to make my red 81 my "keeper", along with the J4000 I'm hopefully getting this weekend. I'll post details up as I decide on them!

Didn't want to hijack the other thread, so cross-posted your aforementioned response here to discuss.

Curious what you're planning to do different w/ the red '82?

Seems you have the copper '81 sorted out and a lot of time invested in it.

I built the 82 for a purpose that I'll never use it for. I mostly do mild trail rides and use it as a daily driver. Honestly, if I ever wheeled it hard, and crushed a corner or caved a rocker I'd be heartbroken. So I'm a big poser, but I don't care. Plus with my neck/nerve situation I have been told not to do anything that will jostle me too hard or I might crush the nerve bundle and loose use of my left arm. But I like the look of extreme... One of the biggest factors is that my wife hates getting up in it, hates the noise while driving, and really doesn't want to go anywhere in it. Over the years I have come to appreciate more stock looks on Scramblers. My wife says I'm growing up...Noooo!!! I want to be able to take the Scrambler to a National at some time, go to Jeep Beach, take it on vacation...but that isn't going to happen in it's current configuration. I could return it to a more stock looks, but it's built and I can't imagine going backwards. And there's some things that I can't easily undo. I'm going to finish a few lagging items, possible repaint it the stock color, and try to maximize what I can get out of it. I absolutely love everything I have done to it, and I know I will miss it once it's sold. But, that's OK.

I have a really nice 81SR Scrambler that has no rust or body damage. It will be my "keeper" build. Appearance wise I will keep it stockish. 2" max lift, smoothest ride I can find. Something between 31x10.50X15 and 285/75/16 tires. Stock paint, striping, half top with stock roll bar. D30 front, either D44 or 9" rear. 4 wheel discs. It will have an LS engine (maybe a 4.8 with a turbo if I can swing it), 4 speed auto, 241C case. Speedhut gauges, upgraded but stock appearing seats, hi-tech sound and nav system, carpet, a/c, etc. All the power and luxury you could ever imagine, in a retro package that honors the origins of the Scrambler. It's looking like Dennis and I might end up with twins... I'm thinking this build will take 1-2 years. Of course, it will get a build thread.

I am also going to acquire a Jeep Gladiator. (Hopefully this weekend!) It will get a similar treatment, with upgraded powertrain and interior. It will be an incremental build, as I'll need to drive it while building the Scrambler. The reason for the Gladiator (other than they're cool) is we need a tow rig for the sweet 24' travel trailer we bought this weekend.

The VW bus will be getting sold too- my wife needs a horse trailer. The horses and her photography are her passion and the VW has been sitting dormant for over a year.

Maybe this is my "middle age crazy", but it's time to make some changes to make life easier and more enjoyable.

Hope this explains things- feel free to ask anything you want!
