Time to update....The holidays were very expensive for me this year. I had to stick $500 into my suburban and $2000 in my Camry. I really hate sticking money into my daily drivers. But it's still cheaper than a new car and my Camry only has 174,000 miles on it. Hopefully I can get another 300,000 out of it. We'll see. Anyways, back to my Jeep. She was my daily driver for the summer and for the most part she ran great. I did have a few issues though. I discovered that mass air flow sensors definitely don't like k&n style air filters. The oil from the filter throws off the sensor. I had to spray the crap out of the sensor with maf sensor cleaner and install a foam air filter. At sandblast it started running like hell. There I discovered a loose connection at the map sensor. Easy fix. It also started making this wierd rotational noise. Raymond was kind enough to go for a test drive with me and of course I couldn't get it to do it when he was with me. Isn't it amazing how things don't do what you want them to when you're trying to show someone something? Oh well, I am going to re-gear so I will have the thing apart anyways. So the list of things I want to do before spring....
1. Now that I'm recovering my bank account I'm definitely getting my lifetime membership here first.

This is long overdue.
2. Re-gear my axles. I refuse to drive any longer with the 2.73 gears on 32inch tires. It just sucks. I want to actually use 5th gear on the freeway as well. Also install lockers front and rear and get one piece axles for the AMC 20.
3. Build a rear roll cage for the kids. I'm taking them to sandblast this year for the first time and I want them to be safe. Just cruising around town is one thing but taking them out of state and going off-road with them definitely makes me nervous.
4. Ditch the full hard top and put the full soft top back on! As far as I'm concerned that hard top can go right back in the corner for another 27 years. Even my wife and kids got upset with me for putting it on in the fall and said it's boring and doesn't feel like a Jeep. Honestly, I agree.
As far as the axles go, I've never rebuilt any before. So this will be a learning experience for me. If anyone has any tips along the way it will be very greatly appreciated. Unless someone tells me otherwise, here's what I plan on using...
1. 3.73 G2 gears. I have been told on a number of occasions that these are really easy to set up and are overall just really good quality. The 3.73s will put me at about 2,200 rpm at 70 mph. Right now in 4th gear I'm at about 2,000 rpm at 70 mph and it cruises really nice.
2. Aussie lockers front and rear. Years ago my old CJ7 had an old school auto locker in it when I got it. I was told it was a Detroit but I never confirmed it. All I can say is that it was scary! It would bang and clunk violently and I swore I would never buy an auto locker again after that. Years later my friend bought one for his 4runner. After my horrible experience with one I strongly discouraged him from buying an auto locker but he did anyways. After he installed it he reported back that he hardly noticed it. I didn't believe him until he let me drive it. It wasn't bad at all! You would feel there occasionally but overall it was very tame. As nice as selectable lockers are, I just really don't like the price tags that go with them. I know the AMC 20 is a somewhat decent axle, but I just don't really want to spend that much on the 20 and Dana 30.
3. One piece axles. I looked around on the forums and of course a lot of people usually recommend Moser, but on quadratec these "ten factory" axles caught my eye. They are about $100 cheaper than the mosers and a few others. At first I figured they were junk based on price but after reading about them on different forums people seem to be having really good luck with them. And apparently they are really good with their warranty. Is there any reason I shouldn't go with these? Anyone here have any experience with them?
