Spent the morning at the show with family, as usual not a lot of Jeeps there but what they had were interesting.

$50k Scrambler:

Guess that makes mine $75k?

Nice little FC-150:

A 10A set up for driving:

My favorite, a delivery van with custom interior:

And a Griswold station wagon clone, complete with dog leash!

Beautiful day for a car show :)

What about the $50k Scrambler? Did you see things about it that warranted it selling for such a price? What drive train did it have?

You can find most of the details here: https://www.barrett-jackson.com/Events/Event/Details/1984-JEEP-SCRAMBLER-CUSTOM-SUV-237098

I'd just start out by saying that if I were to ever sell my Scrambler, I'd go through Barrett-Jackson - they typically fetch 2-3X what you'd find them for sale outside of that auction. I'd also say that beauty is in the eye of the beer holder, and while it wasn't my idea of beauty it obviously was to someone else.

It had a 5.7 V8 conversion with the 4L60E automatic, which I guess opens it up to all 50 states as far as road registration. Trussed front and rear axles (Dana 30 and AMC 20), interior roll cage, bed lined interior, etc. most of which you can see in the images.

The decals were the $20 variety, and the first thing I noticed was a flaky silver paint job over rust on the door paddle handles - a pretty simple $30 replacement. I'm sure with enough time the forum could pick it apart, but I would imagine it to be more like a $25K Scrambler outside of the auction. I'd personally prefer one like @Gueon has for $18.5K. He maybe should've considered tossing his up there on the auction block.

Here's the CJ8 from last year that went for $49.5K, they even removed the roll bar 'cause who needs one anyway: https://www.barrett-jackson.com/Events/Event/Details/1981-JEEP-CJ8-CUSTOM-SUV-225336

Watching these auctions, there's two kinds of vehicles that are sold:
1) the vehicles people with lots of money go there to buy
2) the vehicles that get sold there because those people are in attendance.

This is the latter, someone smart realized that a shiny Jeep on stage and the announcer saying "V8" and "CJ" in the same sentence would likely appeal as a fun toy to a few of those folks who are there and looking at vehicles ten times that price. That's like the buyer's premium on what they're there to purchase :rotfl:

All it takes is two of them who've had enough to drink to quickly drop $5k bids and end up at 2-3x the reasonable sale price. They probably started at $20k, so it's only 6 bids to $50k, might not have even taken a full minute

How about those hinges. :crazy:hinges.jpg
I'm sorry...
the fact that it's so easy to correct the mistake, when you realize the tailgate isn't opening properly, drives me insane on a high dollar "professional" build.

It's such a common error - the shop that helped with my rebuild did it as well. Hard to do when most of these places have a dozen other jeeps around to look at. Makes me think the tailgate hasn't been opened since any of the work was done, cause you'd notice it right away then. Coming out of Florida, so maybe it was Toy Box Jeeps?

To me, everything should work well on a 50k Scrambler. I would also feel that way on a 30k Scrambler. But that's just me, the guy that wrote the check may have thought "eh close enough". Hope he's as happy with his as I am with my old junk.

Agreed, but there are often compromises, especially on drive train swaps. Some things are just going to leak, and there are always electrical gremlins to work out.

Yes you are correct, especially the electrical gremlins as you mentioned. Have you noticed how many roll across the stage with a brake light out?

$50k and AMC 20 should never be in the same paragraph.
Especially with that engine. It would've been trivial to toss something else under there. Everyone has to make compromises, though - the braking system and suspension were put higher on the list of things to do. It's like those weightlifters that skip leg day.

CJ7 sold for over $17k in 2018:

Selling for $12.5 on Craigslist:

That's an unfortunate depreciation.

I guess being shiney is much more valuable than being a well thought out usable build....

Brutal!! Yikes!! Well, I know if I ever sell my Scrambler, I'm going to try to list it at Barrett Jackson!

I've seen this exact same thing happen in my own office. One of the owners (and friend of mine) took his wife to Mecum in Kissimmee. They bought not one Camaro, but TWO. A '68 hardtop with a 427, and a 69 convertible with a 350. They just got caught up in the endorphin rush of the auction and then had buyers remorse after the fact. Sold them both at a loss a few months later.
