Meet Red, my 81 Restomod Build

Thoughts on recovering it with 4 way stretch vinyl? Not sure if the material can stretch enough to smooth out the corner wraps.

Some vinyl material has incredible stretching abilities.
I had thought of that. I have worked with some building the console on the Chev. It would take a lot of work and a lot of luck to pull that off. I’d try except for the logo. I could either lose it or cut it out and glue it on top. Losing it isn’t ok by me, and cut and paste would be tacky I think.

And you’re right- the center bump would be difficult, but the corner wraps would be impossible. There’s a place online that restores dashes- rebuild and then vacuum form vinyl over the top. Might be an option down the road.

After the cracks were repaired I wonder if Plastidip would hold up. Obviously you'd lose the leather grain but it could provide an even color and finish.
That would probably work. I’m thinking something with some texture of its own might be nice. Just gotta mask off the logo.

Going through some stuff while waiting on the cowl gasket. Anyone recognize these? The small stainless ones are about 3/4” long, the black ones are about 1 1/4”. 008F500F-B88A-45FD-8466-2061911C3522.jpeg

Back to the cowl seal issue. The Fairchild gasket fits better but not perfect. I have tried combinations of foam weatherstrip in strategic places to re-align the figment, none worked. I’ve got the original “soft aftermarket” gasket in a makeshift clamp to try and reform it. I’ll keep you posted. 😕

I used this one on my green scrambler, and it fit really good. I don’t know how well it seals though, as I don’t run a top or drive it in the rain.

I’ll keep that in mind. I’ve identified the issue- the seal doesn’t follow the contour of the bottom of the windshield frame. If it did I think the fit would be pretty good. I’m working on that.

The second issue is the dash pad. I’m torn between getting an Omix pad that’s good, or continuing on with the experiment with mine. I hate wasting money, and the texture paint is over $40, plus I’m going to have to carpet the top to get it all even… that’s 25% of the cost of a new dash pad that doesn’t have the potential to warp again or fall apart in the sun this summer.

Thais your own question answered then isn't it?. Get an Omix one and live with it for now you can always fix up your original one later if it annoys you too much and then sell it on, get this thing on the road will you 😁

You are 100% on target.

Never having met you Randy (but I feel like I know you from observing your obsession here), I doubt you'll ever be happy with a fuzzy dash.

Randyzz. Mystery screws in your previous post. Black flat head..visor screws??
No, they head is about 3/4” diameter. I’m guessing they were something I brought home from when I worked for Ford.

I have never seen them, but... it seems that the number of them adds up to a bulkhead retaining setup between the 2 sets of screws, but I have never seen flat head ones like that for the sides of the b-pillars... unless it was a one year thing in 81 maybe?

Hard to say. The big ones are a mystery. I know they aren’t the bulkhead, at least for my 81- I remember removing screws from that. They were all machine thread, not sheet metal. I have parted/rebuilt many Jeeps, and these were in a box marked “81”. So who knows.

Simply throw them out...
you'll soon realize exactly what they are for.

The silver ones I have a few black one just like them from under the dash, holding the ash tray bracket
Could be…although in that case I sure don’t know how I got so many of them!
